TheMovieReport.comMichael DequinaAn intelligent, engaging comedy-drama that will have audiences tapping their toes and running off to buy the soundtrack.
Common Sense MediaBrian CostelloCharming tale of songwriter finding her voice has profanity.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyThe lead, Ileana Douglas, is good, but the musical film suffers from repetitive structure and lack of sufficiently interesting ideas.
Independent (UK)Adam Mars-JonesEdna Buxton... really wants to do is sing her own material, but there's no market for that in 1959. If her character were a song, you'd want her key changes to be less abrupt -- there's not much modulation.
NewsweekDavid AnsenThis is not the smoothest trip: the transitions are bumpy, the lip-synching's imperfect...But rough edges are more than offset by contagious vitality...It may not be precision-tooled, but it's triumphantly alive.

User ReviewSharone GI love this movie, seen it years ago and loved it then, the music is great, I even have the soundtrack. Illeana Douglas does a very great performance, with everyone else backing her up. I agree the lipsynching is cheesy, but it works. the last song in the movies is so great..just awesome.....
User ReviewLaurie CBruce Davison Illeana Douglas and John Turturro Matt Dillon and Eric Stoltz what a great cast and what a great movie. I come to know and love John Turturro in this movie he is outstanding and so is Bruce Davison. Excellent!
User ReviewCasey FDefinitely a 5-star flick! Illeana Douglas is simply adorable as the Carole King-esque Edna Buxton/Denise Waverly. The rest of the ensemble cast is fantastic, with each putting across the tortured artist/songwriter/producer roles they were given. I own the soundtrack and have never gotten sick of it, nor do I tire of watching this move. More people absolutely need to see it and I dare them not to love it!
