The New York TimesVincent CanbyThough special-effects experts in Japan and around the world have vastly improved their craft in the last 30 years, you wouldn't know it from this film.
Washington PostRita KempleyThe fatal flaw in Godzilla 1985 is that it is a bad movie with aspirations of being a good bad movie.
User ReviewJacob T(Japanese Version) This is a highly underrated movie in the series. The dark tone helps this movie a lot, Godzilla being a villain pits the seriousness back in the series, and the Godzilla design and all of the miniatures are amazing. ('Murican version) Just ignore this and watch the Japanese one instead. It's like the Japanese one without everything that made it good (minus the special effects and Godzilla design)
User ReviewGary MOMG, you have to get to the last scene and the closing theme. Man, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. This is, clearly, not so much the legend reborn reinventing of the Godzilla myth that we'll see in the later series so much is it is the final say in the Godzilla we'd known and loved through the 60's and 70's; this film owes far more to the Kaiju of "Mosura" or "Smog Monster" than to the later epics. For one thing, this is probably the last time when SCIENCE is the hero, triumphing over beasts of men and monsters despite the lack of government funding ;) But that last bit, as soon as the techobeat started, I knew it was 1985 all over again, but when the lyrics hit? ... I'm still giggling. First class Godzilla, five thumbs up if I had them.
User ReviewPrivate UHaunting, overwhelming, sublime, and even hinting at a slight inroad into the mind of the monster itself. This is the movie that cemented my fandom for the franchise, and for this indominable and enigmatic screen legend. Long live the King of Monsters!
User ReviewDouglas BOne of the all-time great Godzilla films, the first to bring the big G out of the kiddie hero he'd become. My sis and I both loved the dub for the drunk guy. "Run! Run for your lives! Let's do lunch some time!"
User ReviewZack PI loved it as a kiddo. My inner child is coming out.
User ReviewShawn COne of my personal favs. This was when Yasuko Sawaguchi was young! (something I never cared about as a kid but adds replay value as an adult ;)
User ReviewMatthew SOriginal - full of all the Tokyo crushing you can handle!
User ReviewKen NI really like this one. Very dark and cool
