The storyline of this movie involves a series of motiveless murders committed by various New York residents: a sniper shoots people from a water tower; a father murders his entire family; and a cop opens fire during a St. Patrick's Day parade. The only consistent pattern to the crimes involves the perpetrators calm admissions of guilt, explaining, "God told me to." While investigating the murders, catholic police detective Peter Nicholas is increasingly troubled by evidence of a Christ-like figure named Bernard Phillips who appeared to each of the killers and can't seem to shake the feeling that his own fate is somewhat linked to this mysterious being. As he comes closer to the truth, his worst fears are confirmed.

Movie Reviews

Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 8/10 by Dennis SchwartzAn upsetting film not meant for the timid.
The Seattle Times - 8/10 by Mark RahnerGod Told Me To overflows with such perverse and subversive notions that no amount of shoddy editing and substandard camerawork can conceal the film's unusual qualities.
Slant Magazine - 8/10 by Chuck BowenGod Told Me To is one of the key American horror films from the 1970s to mine the internally sexual, racial quandaries of a nation beset by one great civil rights catastrophe after another.
eFilmCritic.com - 7/10 by Scott WeinbergThough not among Larry Cohen's most wholly satisfying productions, God Told Me To should prove a worthwhile curiosity to fans of 70's era horror movies told with a decidedly 'cop flick' feel.
The A.V. Club - 7/10 by A.A. DowdAmbitious in scale despite its modest budget, God Told Me To also established Cohen’s talent for getting a lot of bang for his limited buck. As a film about faith, it’s pure hooey, but it’s hooey with a provocative edge.
FilmLand Empire - 7/10 by Anton BitelHere the machinery of divine intervention is taken for a freaky secular spin via the familiar cinematic modes of urban realism and even science fiction, and a detective mystery becomes a mystery rite.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 6/10 by Ken HankeNot Cohen's best, but perversely fascinating
Chicago Sun-Times - 3/10 by Roger EbertThis is the most confused feature-length film I've ever seen.
User Review - 10/10 by Stevie SLarry Cohen's most innovative and creative film, one of the stand-outs of great B movie horror with A movie acting.
User Review - 10/10 by Christopher SThis movie is very bizarre. VERY bizarre but that's part of its charm. Basically Richard Lynch is an alien that was birthed by a normal Earth women after she was abducted by aliens & artificially inseminated. He has all of these powers so people think he's God. He wills normal people to kill. And he looks pretty queenish. And he has a chest/ribcage vagina. I kid you not. The film opens up with a sniper on top of a water tower shooting a bunch of innocent people because "God told him to." Peter Nicholas, a good cop that happens to be pretty religious, goes up & talks to the sniper. They carry on a normal conversation & the sniper seems perfectly fine...except that he's capping a bunch of innocents. Then he just jumps off the water tower. If John Kimble were there, he would've came down from the towa. So more killings take place, committed by very normal people. God told them to. The most disturbing one is a family man that killed his wife, son, & daughter. He casually talks about how he did it like nothing is wrong. Disturbed the hell out of me. Very creepy. And one of the normal people was played by Andy Kaufman, in his first role. He played a cop that just started shooting people during a St. Patrick's Day parade. Larry Cohen gives us a fun mixture of crime, horror, & sci-fi topped off with religious commentary. And it even says that Moses & all of the other religious icons were aliens. It's a very odd movie but very entertaining. Tony Lo Bianco did a great job as Peter Nicholas. His acting was really good. Also featuring Larry Cohen film regular Jim Dixon & Deborah "Chicken's Good" Raffin. It also has a pimp/drug dealer named Zero & a crackhead.
