Soe Hok Gie is an activist who lived in the sixties. Set in the darkest era of Indonesian modern history, GIE is an interpretation of what happened based on his journal. He is a history student when his world stretches between politics and personal life. A critical young man, he sounds his great concerns about his collapsing nation. Yet, he is sensitive and romantic. He loves to explore the mountains, to admire the great beauty of nature. His life is a clash between the high drama of national political events and the small world of friendship and romance. He is falling apart when he sees that his constant battle for justice and truth gives labor to another dictatorial regime, and caused the massacre of millions suspected communists, including his childhood friend. He continues to fight but his uncompromised idealism drives people away. His best friends left him. The woman he loves rejects him. From time to time, nature is a place where Gie finds peace and it's where his life comes to an end. Gie dies on the summit of the highest mountain in Java, just a day before his 27th birthday.

| User ReviewBagas Aand amazing performance by its actors is that how Riri Riza described Gie and the potrayal of Gie by Nicholas Saputra is superbly brilliant and outrageously believable. And also that Gie's aspirations for Indonesia to be upstanding the corruption and the false power of authority by the goverment is very profound. "Lebih baik diasingkan daripada menyerah kemunafikan." Gie is one among of the most influential and the best Indonesian films that whole-heartedly filmed, has amazingly great performance and thoughtfully profound thoughts. |

| User ReviewValiant TI really have mixed feelings about this film. First of all, it has a very good material to start with, but Riri Riza seem to try too hard in aiming the movie for a younger audience. Personally, I don't like the overly commercial cast. The movie is also overly narrated. The narration seems to take on a huge role in explaining the plot. I tend to appreciate movies that is slightly more open for interpretation than this. Despite its drawbacks, I still enjoyed the movie. It's definitely an improvement when compared to other pop Indonesian films. It has a strong motivational message to the young generation, and brave in its attempt to re-tell the history post-soeharto regime. Along the lines of Soe Hok Gie own's spirit, this movie both bold and brave in its story telling, especially in a country with harsh politic climate like Indonesia. |
