Time OutGeoff AndrewIt's a movie that parades authenticity, but never settles on its own point of view.
Groucho ReviewsPeter CanaveseWins the day by giving a detailed account of the three-day battle (for the first time in a feature film), shot on the actual locations where the events took place. [Blu-ray]
VarietyDaniel M. KimmelGettysburg succeeds as a motion picture event, and as a re-creation of a pivotal chapter of American history.
User ReviewHeather RObviously the best civil war movie. I think I've watched it at least 300 times. I started watching it when I was 15 or maybe younger and I know the movie outside and in, but I continue to watch it and continue to tear up at the speeches. It's that moving and realistic. I especially liked going to Gettysburg, and seeing where it all happened. It definately helped me get a fix on the civil war history and since I've read any book about it I can get my hands on. Actually I met the writers son (since the writer is dead) and had my picture taken with him and such. Really nice guy.
User ReviewKenneth GIt's hero worship, and heartbreak. Everytime I watch this movie it's like driving towards the inevitible cliff because North or South you get attatched to the characters. You emotionally connect to them, and you have an outsider's view on how the situation looks (with 150 years of hindsight). Simply amazing.
User ReviewMarcus Bif you're a civil war buff you'll love this movie
User ReviewEric ASimply the best U.S. Civil War movie around. Gives equal time to the North and South, great score, great production, great performances. And the re-releases with the cut content are even better! Obviously the history isn't 100% becuase it's a Hollywood production but it's close enough to be mostly accurate, at least as far as a film will get. 5 stars.
User ReviewToteaux PA good visual reference for military science and military history courses. This film inspires me to compare the US Civil War 1861-1865 and the Java War/ Diponegoro War 1825-1830. The latter broke out in 1825, but in terms of military tactics, Diponegoro and his generals (such as Sentot Prawiro Dirjo, Mulyosentiko and Tumenggung Surorejo) did better in outmaneuvering superior enemies. Diponegoro had practiced "guerilla tactic" to attack the superior Dutch infantry and artillery. I am just wondering whether Union Generals and Confederate Generals did not have any ideas of guerilla tactics at that time. In this case, they could have been able to minimize the number of victims. Perhaps, the battle of Gettysburg was one battle that shows the stupidity of the generals of both sides since they unnecessarily sacrificed a large number of soldiers.
User ReviewDerek PGreat movie, all star cast, outstanding historical detail.
User ReviewNick TJeff Daniels best performaance. Tom Berenger and Martin Sheen also some of their finest moments. Sam Elliot's supporting role is well played. Many people have dismissed this film as having glorified Colonel Chamberlin (Daniels' Character) and the relationship between Longstreet and Lee (played by Berenger and Sheen) was not beftting enough. That's a load of crap. I fell in love with this film at the age of 8 and watch it each year on the anniversary of the battle.
