User Review - 10/10 by Russ MAwesome sequel to a classic 80's horror flick.
User Review - 10/10 by Clark PBack in 1987 'The Gate' surprised everybody when it raced up the box office charts and made more than three times the amount of money it took to make. In 1989 the entire creative team behind the teen horror flick returned to lense a sequel (which was shelved in the U.S. until 1992 due to distribution problems). Louis Tripp (the only cast member from the previous outing) returns as budding teen sorceror Terry who this time opens 'The Gate' on purpose believing he can harness the power of the demons to do some good. A punk gang are along for the ride. And naturally things start to go awry. Fans of the first 'Gate' movie will not want to miss this one. It's less of a rollercoaster than the original. It's much more menacing in tone and instead cranks up the tension at a pace that allows more in terms of character development. Tripp and Pamela Segall (as feisty Liz) deserve special acting nods and the special effects are simply as amazing as ever.
User Review - 10/10 by Allan CSequel to the surprisingly good first film boast the return of the original film's director, Tibor Takacs , and writer, Michael Nankin. However, this sequel is minus a before-he-was-famous Stephen Dorff and instead has supporting actor Louis Tripp taking over as the lead. He was a pretty funny supporting character in the original, playing the heavy metal nerd who accidentally opens a gate to hell in his friend's backyard by playing a metal album backwards and reading ancient words off of the album. This sequel picks up after the events of the first film, and Tripp and some new friends once again opens the titular gate to have the little demons do his bidding. As you'd expect, things don't go as planned and the new group of teens find themselves running for their lives and trying to figure out how to once again close the gate. This sequel features more stop motion special effects, as well as more monsters, which was a lot of fun. However, lost in this sequel is the childlike Steven Spielberg sensibility. The first film felt like a horror movie version of "E.T." "Explorers" or "The Goonies," but this sequel felt more like a straight horror movie. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but that was a strength of the original film. Overall, despite note being as good as the original, this sequel is well worth watching for fans of 80s horror films (even if "Gate 2" was released in 1990).
User Review - 8/10 by ken jTerry starts getting into dark magic and opening the gate back up. To impress a girl he might kill the world... They have a demon that grants wishes, but everything they get turns bad after a day. (The car turns into shit, ext.) Even watching it today, 2008, it still had such high entertainment value. it's like watching Weird Science with demons.
User Review - 6/10 by C.G. Cit was a bit trippy, made me want to see the first one.
User Review - 6/10 by Bruce BYou have to take this film for what it is, Candian Horror and Horror for young people, As you have a Harry Potter Looking Main Star (Louis Tripp) and his bad girl, and 2 rowdy friends who try to make life hard for young Terry. The Special Effects are what saves this movie and brings it to 3 stars. Grossed me out when the guy squeezed his zit and it shot out of his pimple like a water fountain. But besides all this beforeGate II was over I was hoping that there was a Gate 3, but still with all that still only worth 3 stars. I have yet to See The Gate, like this one when I find it in a pawn shop I will pick it up.
User Review - 6/10 by Zombie MFor The Gate II, returning director Tibor Takacs and writer Michael Nankin attempt to deliver us another fun and entertaining follow-up to the 80's hit original, but come somewhat short. The Gate II follows Terry (returning Louis Tripp who may have inspired the Harry Potter character because he's seriously got the look in this film) who returns to his former best friend's abandoned house to try and summon the demons from the gate once more in order to have wishes granted, though this time with a smarter approach, however, fellow schoolmates/punks make him botch the conjuring and kill the small minion that comes through. The minion isn't dead for long though and when it comes back, all of their wishes start to come true only to turn to literal poop. Eventually, the minion gets loose and things really get problematic. As I stated earlier, The Gate II doesn't seem to have that same magic that made the original so special. The cheesy 80's effects and storyline are still there (though it's 1992 now), however, I couldn't help but feel as though this film had been severely rushed (I mean, c'mon, they had 5 years to make this sequel). Overall, I still liked it for what it was, but it doesn't really hold a candle to the first film. It's a shame Louis Tripp never got much work afterwards as he was fun to watch in both films. Some other faces to look for include punk Moe, played by Simon Reynolds (SAW IV, P2) and female punk/love interest Pamela Segal (Pamela Adlon now) who went on to great success in voice over work (The Oblongs, King of the Hill, etc). Decent film, but poor sequel.
User Review - 6/10 by Senor CBetter than expected but still not nearly as good as the first.
User Review - 4/10 by Alexander ASome cool effects are bogged down by a plot that seems made up on the spot.
User Review - 4/10 by Corey BNot nearly as enjoyable as the first one. Seem to be writing this alot recently.
