Slant MagazineCarson LundThe film’s tonal and situational shapeshifting doesn’t go to the surrealist lengths of Luis Buñuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, but James Vaughan similarly indulges in burlesquing upper-middle-class complacency.
The New York TimesBen KenigsbergWhile the pieces don’t necessarily fit in obvious ways, that’s presumably the point — and part of what makes Friends and Strangers so singular.
RogerEbert.comTomris LafflyThis ambiguously humorous film with a shaky pace and viewpoint sets forth a tough proposition: will you be patient for its 80+ minutes of running time, accept that nothing much will actually happen throughout that duration and settle for occasional jolts of rewards only?
User Reviewr96skKinda good, kinda bad. I enjoyed 'Friends and Strangers' a bit at the beginning and a lot near the end, though the middle is lame - in my opinion, of course. The start holds intrigue and the whole chilled vibe is cool, though come the midway point it loses all steam. Thankfully, the concluding parts are its best. It's the scenes at the villa(s) for the wedding that are the best, I genuinely enjoyed those moments. The rest is either forgettable or straight up uninteresting. It might've worked out better if they stuck with Emma Diaz's Alice, who seemed better in the acting department, rather than Fergus Wilson's Ray.
