ViewLondonMatthew TurnerAn impressively structured Japanese drama heightened by strong performances, a catchy theme song and an offbeat script that's laced with subtle humour.
Eye for FilmAnton BitelFish Story may at first seem almost aleatoric in its structure, but this punkish chronicle of hope enduring in extremis and heroism paid forward turns out to be much more than a mere shaggy dog story.
Time OutTom HuddlestonThe result is a wonderfully entertaining and affecting patchwork of ideas, incidents, contrivance and coincidence.
Little White LiesLiz HaycroftLike the title song with its crazy lyrics, it's quirky, fun and yet slightly overlong.
Dork ShelfShelagh Rowan-LeggFish Story is a wonderful addition to the canon of Japanese mash-up films, and one that will leave you singing the title song long after you've left the theatre.
GuardianCatherine ShoardYou can't fault it for narrative ambition, nor, in fact, for curious -- one might say fishy -- watchability.
Times (UK)Kate MuirA cool, surreal film, and not a little fishy.
User ReviewNicki MExcellent! Got to admit, my attention started to waver in the last part as I just couldn't figure out what all the stories had to do with each other. The song is pretty cool and I managed to stick it out to the end. Glad I did. Wow, did not see all those tie ins coming right at the end when I thought the movie was actually over. I loved the story of the book being a scam too, yet all that impact. Awesome.
User ReviewSimon PEasily the best Japanese film about a little known song by an unpopular punk band saving the world! Ingenious.
User ReviewDavid OAwesome Japanese movie. Worth watching for sure. "Music stacked up like wood blocks. Is the champion of justice!"
