The A.V. ClubTasha RobinsonFinding Joe feels like a homemade quilt: It's warm and comforting, but visually busy, with a repeating pattern that some will find stuffy and overwhelming.
East Bay ExpressKelly VanceUseful and arguably illuminating documentary introduction to the work of Joseph Campbell.
San Francisco ChronicleWalter AddiegoCampbell's admirers will probably enjoy the documentary, but I don't think it will do much for anyone else.
VarietyDennis HarveyCampbell's career and influence encompass much wider fields of interest than are considered here, despite the picture's colorful surface. Narrowing its focus to the simplest inspirational gist, with zero insight into the man behind it, Finding Joe winds up seeming like an infomercial for a personal-growth program.
Los Angeles TimesKevin ThomasFinding Joe is so centered on the self-realization of the individual that it provokes one to contemplate the millions of oppressed, imperiled people that haven't the luxury of pursuing such an inner quest.
The Hollywood ReporterKirk HoneycuttEveryone's comments are thoughtful and articulate but everyone stays "on message" so steadfastly that no dialogue ever ensues. It's 20 people giving the same lecture.
Slant MagazineChuck BowenFinding Joe maintains that every person should, as Joseph Campbell wrote, "find your bliss," a potentially valuable nugget of wisdom that this film manages to reduce to 80 minutes of celebs giving themselves hugs.
Arizona RepublicRichard NilsenIt comprises some 20 talking heads, each pretty much saying the same thing, interspersed with film of children dressed up as mythical heroes, enacting the stages of the "hero's journey."
User ReviewJane MGreat film! Inspiring! Catch it while you can :)
User ReviewEdward MI was lucky enough to have seen this documentary and loved it. The cinematography was phenomenal-- and I don't even usually notice these things but Solomon showcases his shots without ever taking attention away from the heart of the documentary-- it's message. Using the Hero's Journey as a foundation for the message, Finding Joe delves into the workings of the Hero's Journey, the steps, and cycles, and ultimately brings it back to the earthly realm and how we could apply it to our own lives. With an extensive list of interviewees from Deepak Chopra to Tony Hawk, this documentary is enriched with their life experiences. This documentary flipped some switches on inside of me and really helped me take notice of my life's track... and that, to me, is invaluable.
