Los Angeles TimesGary GoldsteinThe war scenes and their aftermath are involving and emotionally sound as well as skillfully shot and edited. And if several moments smack of revisionist history, perhaps best to ascribe them to dramatic license.
Village VoiceNick SchagerThe film stands as a pinnacle of revisionist bullshit.
Common Sense MediaRenee SchonfeldFierce, violent Civil War tale takes liberties with history.
User ReviewValerie MI loved it. Our sons were extras in the movie, but I knew the story was going to be a hit, because of the fact that not many are educated on the VMI cadets and their role in the Civil War. Jason Isaacs is one of my favorite actors, and was unbelievable in the movie. All of them did such an amazing job and the movie is so worth it to see it at the theaters. I will see it again and again..and if you're a female, take tissues..I didn't have mine handy so I had to use the food napkins. :-) GO SEE IT NOW!!!!!!
User ReviewBill BGreat movie, you will be moved! Go see it.

User ReviewDavid HIt's hard for people to imagine that confederate soldiers were humans with complex loyalties and motivations. And, God forbid, that many white people fought for a cause to which they didn't subscribe...yet still fought, for their fellow soldiers and their families and a host of other reasons. Life is messy. This film is complimentary, not anathema, to the realities of the Civil War.

User ReviewMatthew AWasn't terrible but wasn't great, acting was pretty bad and it hasn't of the typical cliche scenes. I do not understand the Confederate troops and their big heart for the slaves, I thought they were fighting to keep slavery. 3 stars
User ReviewWalker KNetflix 5/10/15 Interesting from a historical perspective but kind of predictable and formulaic with some weak dialogue. Did enjoy it however.
