A former high school football star and one time college athlete, Jon has landed back in the place of his youth -- Fairhaven -- a small fishing village on the Massachusetts coast. Now in his early thirties, and with the promise of younger days seemingly washed ashore, Jon's vague feelings of dissatisfaction are crystallized by a television interview with his football hero Tom Brady, who proclaims that, even after three super bowl wins, "There's got to be something more than this." Jon recounts his epiphany to Sam, old friend and schoolmate who married early, fathered early, divorced early and never left town. Sam made his own peace with small town life years ago, and is happy enough just to provide a stable home for his loving daughter, Cara, while secretly still pining for his beautiful ex-wife Kate. Together, Jon and Sam anticipate the return of Dave, the third member of their once-indomitable trio. Having left town seven years ago and never looked back, Dave is finally returning to Fairhaven on the occasion of his estranged father's death. As tonic to Jon's soulful self-inquiry and Sam's stoic loneliness, Dave is determined to inject some heavy-duty, Vegas-style fun into the funeral weekend. But when old dreams and simmering resentments come to the beer & tequila-soaked surface of their reunion, not even Dave can fend off a healthy dose of reality.

The New York TimesStephen HoldenThere isn't a dishonest moment in Fairhaven, Tom O'Brien's piercing, wistful portrait of three longtime buddies in their mid-30s who reunite around a funeral in a southeastern Massachusetts fishing community.
amNewYorkRobert LevinTom O'Brien smartly stresses realistic, submerged feelings instead of overwrought dramatics in his low-key portrait of friendship and all its complications.
Entertainment WeeklyLisa SchwarzbaumPersonal tenderness combines with a good sense of composition and a naturalistic storytelling style to give a small, familiar premise a nice lilt.
VarietyJoe LeydonWhile there's something undeniably fascinating about the way Fairhaven repeatedly avoids predictable payoffs for portentous dramatic setups, narrative momentum is conspicuous by its absence.
Hollywood ReporterDavid RooneyNewcomer Tom O'Brien shows promise in this mellow drama about three buddies from small-town coastal Massachusetts.
Time OutKeith UhlichThough its insights are slight-the movie feels as delicate and ephemeral as its sleepy winter surroundings - you can't help but admire the overall generousness O'Brien shows to his characters and performers.
New York Daily NewsJoe NeumaierMovies like this, from "Diner" to "Beautiful Girls" to "Garden State," have a standard trajectory, and this film's no different. But it has a nuance and a rumpled comfort with itself, which turns Fairhaven into an inviting place to visit.
Boston GlobeTom RussoO'Brien and his castmates seem to play loose with his script a bit more than they should in an effort to give the material a lived-in feeling.
Slant MagazineNick McCarthyThe film plays coy with its quintessential indie-dramedy setup, eschewing narrative and tension in favor of convivial character interplay and master shots of wintry landscapes.
