User Review - 8/10 by Ari AReally great documentary, but I wish it had been more involved and discussed more films.
User Review - 8/10 by Andrea SThe documentary The Celluloid Closet, which is also about the history of queer cinema, does it better than this one, however, this is still a good documentary by itself. And I am glad that I am familiar with most of the movies mentioned. The topic is interesting, and I really like and agree with what all of the interviewees are saying but I think this should have included or mentioned more foreign queer films.
User Review - 8/10 by Jen TA great documentary with some fantastic interviews and really engaging stories about the history of Queer Cinema. Perfect for a primer, perfect for an enthusiast.
User Review - 8/10 by Sunil JI liked this for the exact reason that people in the film say gays like gay cinema - it is our story. Unfortunate that it is all about the US market but it's still insightful and informing - and a good place to find out about films to seek out and see. The segments that contain John Waters are priceless.
User Review - 8/10 by Richard CQuickly discusses defining movements in queer cinema on a time line, mostly American films: controversial scenes, sexual liberation or simply filming liberties. Ultimately gives lots of recommendations for me to track down, and speaks out to "young filmmakers" demanding unexplored areas to be filmed and released. My second "queer cinema" documentary; there should be one made every year since more changes are being made more rapidly and it will be interesting to see what the effect on the media is with the recent release of Bruno, which is what a lot of these GLBT advocates and members have been hinting at wanting.
User Review - 8/10 by Christian CThrough interviews with gay and lesbian writers, producers, directors and actors and clips of films we're guided down the road of history of queer cinema to explore its roots and influences.
User Review - 6/10 by Melanie HSo I still liek the Celluloid Closet better to look at Queer Film, this documentary talks more about the place and role of Queer Film within mainstream Hollywood and mainstream America. It presents Queer Theory and Film Theory in a way most people can udnerstand and grasp. An interesting watch for sure...
User Review - 6/10 by Ashley TA very thorough history lesson on queer cinema, covering just about every movie and featuring many queer actors, directors, and other talents in interviews. Comes off as a tad pretentious at times, but you'll come out (heh heh) of it very well-educated.
User Review - 6/10 by Heather MObviously, this can't be as good as "The Celluloid Closet," but it's still entertaining.
User Review - 6/10 by Fran CA moderately lightweight documentary about the history of queer cinema in the US and its role in contemporary society. Generally the interviews here are well conducted, with good subjects in this field - Gus Van Sant, Don Roos etc - and all serves well to give a general *overview* of queer cinema, pointing out the important events and films. Unfortunately it only really scratches the surface, and ends up trying to cover far too much in its short running time (81 min). The whole sub-category of trans-cinema is almost completely marginalised, and though this film calls itself a 'History of Queer Cinema', nothing outside of the US is taken account of! Considering that two of the most important 'queer' films, 'My Beautiful Laundrette' and (to a slightly more mainstream degree) 'The Crying Game' come from the UK, it's a shame to see this stuff ignored. I'm also sick of people harping on about straight actors playing queer characters - for Christ's sake, a director will pick the best actor for a role, their sexuality shouldn't matter! Get over yourselves. Erm... rant aside, this is an enjoyable, though far from perfect, TV-style doco.
