Movie Reviews

New York Times - 10/10 by Vincent CanbyOne of Ozu's least dark comedies, which is not to say that it's carefree, but, rather, that it's gentle and amused in the way that it acknowledges time's passage, the changing of values and the adjustments that must be made between generations.
Chicago Reader - 8/10 by Dave KehrThis 1958 film by Yasujiro Ozu (his first in color) is gentle, spare, and ultimately elusive, in a quietly satisfying way.
Old School Reviews - 7/10 by John A. NesbitOzu demonstrates that he can adjust readily with a Technicolor palate to present a warm family drama that moves as steadily as one of his signature trains
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 7/10 by Dennis SchwartzYasujiro Ozu's first film in color is his usual engaging family drama.
Classic Film and Television - 2/10 by Michael E. GrostCheerful but powerful film about a woman who wants to choose her spouse despite family objection.
User Review - 10/10 by John AA lighter and more humorous touch from Ozu, though the action remains grounded in a serious familial dispute. The perspective here on aging and family dynamics is so refreshing, in large part because Ozu refuses to pass judgment on any of his main characters. Instead, the film presents each of them with dignity, allowing the viewers to appreciate their common humanity. And, oh, that poetry recitation--so well-placed and so meaningful as the characters see more clearly beyond themselves.
User Review - 10/10 by Gabriel DOzu's first color film brings with it a deft light touch, delightful humor, and the right decision to let the "kids" take over this time. Ozu segues into modernity much easier than his paternal characters. What a delight. I could see Fred MacMurray starring in an English remake in my perfect world.
User Review - 10/10 by Matt HAnother riveting family drama from Japanese master Ozu. Also his first feature in color. Beautiful cinematography.
User Review - 10/10 by Aaron POzu makes a wonderful transition to color.
User Review - 10/10 by Pavandeep SI found this to be really delightful personally. It was really a joy to see this film in colour, where Ozu, a master, is doing the same topic over again but always with a new dimension. It's like inventing colour, by some obscure mixture of colours and I'll be damned If I see amything like what Ozu does.
