El Topo decides to confront warrior masters on a transformative desert journey he begins with his six-year-old son, who must bury his childhood totems to become a man. El Topo (the mole) claims to be God, while dressed as a gun-slinger in black, riding a horse through a mystical landscape strewn with American Western and ancient Eastern religious symbols. Bandits slaughtered a village on his path, so El Topo avenges the massacred, then forcibly takes their leader's woman Mara as his. El Topo's surreal way is bloody, sexual and self-reflective, musing of his own demons, as he tries to vanquish those he encounters.

Movie Reviews

The Irish Times - 10/10 by Tara BradyAlejandro Jodorowsky’s movie has a strange, magical aura for cineastes.
Chicago Sun-Times - 10/10 by Roger EbertThe film exists as an unforgettable experience, but not as a comprehensible one.
Countingdown.com - 10/10 by Larry CarrollThis could quite possibly be the strangest film you'll ever watch. And I mean that in the best possible way. Track this one down.
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) - 9/10 by John BeifussAlejandro Jodorowsky may be full of it, but I'm thankful that he spread it -- whatever it is -- across the screen in 'El Topo.'
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzEverything about this mystical trip smacks of narcissism, even the scenes where the filmmaker is lowering himself in acts of self-deprecation.
Antagony & Ecstasy - 8/10 by Tim BraytonWhile I truly do doubt that modern viewer will have much use for Jodorowsky's dated spiritual philosophy, the style with wich he expresses that philosophy is often quite exciting.
Eye for Film - 8/10 by Anton Bitela mystic trip through political, religious and philosophical terrains, gunning down all normative notions of what the western - or indeed Western civilisation - is supposed to be.
Oregonian - 8/10 by Shawn LevyIt's steeped in blood and sex and dream imagery and weird music and imparts a sense of heat and wonder and even revulsion in a way that always feels artful and exact.
Q Network Film Desk - 8/10 by James Kendrickits mixture of genre revisionism, religious mysticism, and shocking visuals felt new and wild and meaningful, at least to those who wanted to see it that way.
Film Threat - 8/10 by Phil HallMessage to Allen Klein: please put this film back into official release.
