User ReviewCurtis RI know most people wouldn't give this film five stars but I love The Runaways and am a huge fan of this labor of love documentary by band replacement bassist Vicky Tischler-Blue. This film chronicles the rise of the legendary 70's girl group, The Runaways. This film features interviews with band members Currie, Ford, West, Fox, and Blue. It features other perspectives as well like taskmaster manager Kim Fowley who brought the girls from very different backgrounds together that led to their success but whose differences ultimately led to their demise. Fowley took advantage of these girls, lied to their parents, and used a self described boot camp mentality to break the girls emotionally. A couple of the mothers of the girls gave their views on how they were duped by Fowley. This film is peppered with lots of live performance material and home videos. For unknown reasons Joan Jett chose not to participate in this film. My favorite Runaway was original bassist Jackie Fox who still looks beautiful today. Lita Ford who was sort of the unofficial alpha female of the group still comes off as being brash and full of herself but used The Runaways as a springboard to become a rock legend.
User ReviewChristine RI caught this randomly one night on cable and was pleasantly surprised. It's a great watch and so much I didn't know about the Runaways. The insanity of their manager and the chaos that those then teenagers had to deal with. I highly recommend this film, even just to see it once.
User ReviewAdam CA very decent documentary of the band The Runaways. Most the women form the band were talked to with the exception of Joan Jett though her presence if felt through the stories told by other band members. The ladies are very upfront about their time in the band and even address the verbal/emotional/sexual abuse by their producer. Definitely worth a watch.
User ReviewCarolyn GDefinitely a must-see for Runaways fans but the glaring absence of Joan Jett did leave a hole in the narrative. Still, the other ladies filled in nicely and it made me lament the death of the band all the more. Somebody really needed to step in and put their foot in Kim Fowley's ass!
User ReviewTiffany DThis was an interesting doc which is a nice warm-up to the Jett-produced film coming this spring. We get perspectives from most of the band members but sadly Joan wouldn't participate and she also blocked the use of thier music. Talking to a couple of the girls' mothers a nice touch, too. I'd def suggest it to both fans and those with newfound interest.
User ReviewSteven CHere is a very personal documentary about the classic all-girl 70s rock band, The Runaways. It was made by them for the fans. It takes you through the bands history, from creation to demise. It's all told from their point of views so it can be a bit bias but it does a good job of exposing the exploitation and greed that ran rampant and unpunished during that time period of music. If you are a fan of the band, this is an absolute must see. It's emotional and personal and best of all, unrestrained, just like The Runaways themselves.
User ReviewBruno LGreat documentary about The Runaways. Joan Jett was missing in the interviews, but it was still great to hear from the girls in the band what was going on at that time with them.
User ReviewJennifer GA pretty good documentary about my favorite band, made by a former band member.
