Chicago TribuneA.H. WeilerThis running account of Pier 6 brawls, miscegenation, romance and religion that disrupt the idyllic life on a post-World War II South Sea island paradise is sheer contrivance effected in hearty, fun-loving, truly infectious style.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonFor once director John Ford used his cornball sense of humor in a proper setting.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyThough not in top form, director John Ford and star John Wayne, building on previous and better collaborations in this easy-going (and lazy) adventure set in the Pacific, offering good old fun with the Duke, Jack Warden, Dorothy Lamour and Lee Marvin.
Village VoiceAndrew SarrisSupremely goofy in tone, the film pits Wayne (in his last Ford film) and Marvin as drunken pals who careen from one friendly brawl to the next. A Pacific island paradise becomes their silly playpen.
Chicago ReaderDave KehrThe verdant, lush Hawaiian setting is visually stunning but the slapstick is forced and unbecoming.
User ReviewKat MA little different for JW but still done in a style that only the Duke could pull off.
User ReviewAshley HDonovan's Reef is an excellent film. It is about dealing with moral issues such as racial bigotry, corporate greed, American belief of societal superiority and hypocrisy. John Wayne and Lee Marvin give amazing performances. The screenplay is well written. John Ford did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the adventure and humor. Donovan's Reef is a must see.
