Groucho Reviews - 8/10 by Peter CanaveseIn many ways, Spearhead from Space is terribly clunky...[but it] remains an historically important adventure and one with recognizable influences on stories to come... [Blu-ray]
SFX Magazine - 8/10 by Nick SetchfieldAn odd, chilly resetting of Doctor Who that plunders body parts from Quatermass and The Avengers, it feels like a pilot for a series that never quite came.
User Review - 10/10 by Callum Bsuch a great doctor Who episode and I prefer the autons it this story than the moden onces.
User Review - 8/10 by Connor SA good story to start off the Third Doctor's time in the Tardis.
User Review - 8/10 by Mikael KProbably the biggest game change Doctor Who has ever gone through during its 50 year run was at the beginning of season seven of the original run. Patrick Troughton's incarnation of the titular character was forced to regenerate in the season six finale and was told that he would no longer travel in space and time. He was to be confined in Earth in one time, his memories of higher Timelord technologies locked. "Speaheads from Space" opens season seven and introduces us to John Pertwee's incarnation of the Doctor. The show starts a unique, Earth and time bound period in the series. It's also the first Who story shot in color. I think that the current episodes- and most of the episodes of DW overall- resemble the first seasons of the show more than season 7, which acts kind of as a precursor to Torchwood, handling then current settings and situations. "Spearheads" has quite a bit of comedy in it, also something we didn't see a lot of during the classic run. The simple space invasion story works well enough as a new pilot episode for a completely reborn series, introducing Liz Shaw's much loved character as well as brings back familiar quest stars as permanent cast members.
User Review - 8/10 by Joe SJohn Pertwee makes his debut in the first color and only 16mm filmed Doctor Who serial. RIP to the Brig. Very much a precursor to shows like the X-files here.
User Review - 8/10 by Don SA strong start for Pertwee, and the only classic story completely shot on film. Jon makes quite an entrance, and even takes a shower! The Brig is back which allows for some continuity, and Miss Shaw is an intriguing and sophisticated companion. Definately worth watching, and how scary it must have been for the kids back in 1970 to see those shop dummy's "break out" of the shops and murder the passersby!
