User Review - 6/10 by Allan CThis film was sitting on my Netflix list for quite a while. The only reason I watched it is that it was directed by Tobe Hooper, who's directed some horror classics like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Funhouse," "Poltergeist," and "Lifeforce" (okay not everyone thinks 'Lifeforce" is a classic, but I do) but Hooper has also directed some serious duds like "The Mangler," possibly the worst Stephen King film adaptation. My overall opinion of Hooper is that most of his film are only as good as their scripts. His best films were written by heavyweight writers like Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Block, or g Don Jakoby and Dan O'Bannon. "Dijinn" sadly represents another weak script, but it did have some interesting elements. The story is essentially an old fashioned haunted house tale, but with a twist of being set in the United Arab Emirates, which does bring a fair amount of interesting cultural elements to a fairly well worn horror formula. A young couple returns home to Dubai and moves into a fancy new high rise apartment building. When the wife begins seeing and hearing things that may or may not really be there, the already strained relationship between the couple becomes even more strained. The middle eastern setting goes a long way, as does director Hooper's visually arresting style that focuses on atmosphere and suspense over cheap scares. However, besides the setting, the story is so unoriginal and derivative that it nearly sinks what could have been a much stronger film. Borrowing from everything from "Rosemary's Baby" to "The Others," it's almost impossible to keep up with which films this script is stealing from. The ending seemed particularly unoriginal and cliched. Despite all that, director Hooper salvages the weak script and makes the film watchable. Overall, this is worth checking out for Tope Hooper fans or for horror fans looking for something slightly different from the norm.
User Review - 6/10 by Chris MTobe Hooper, along with John Carpenter and George Romero are my favorite American pioneer horror genre directors. Hooper has had a spotty career since the mid 80's but I generally find something to like and have been entertained by his misfires. With controversy and an extreme delayed release with Djinn, I am not sure if the version that I saw was the original Hooper version that screened at a festival or two or the alleged reshot one that was hacked up in an effort to not offend the Arabic community. While there is nothing groundbreaking, the camera work is good and is reminiscent of other Hooper movies. Ultimately it was cool to see Hooper mix in with the Arabic culture to present a movie that while cliched and predictable, still had a semblance of suspense. Some of the dialogue was a little off and came out awkward but the actors weren't bad. In fact, most of the female cast were stunningly beautiful. While Tobe Hooper may never reach the highs of Texas Chainsaw 1 and 2, The Funhouse, Poltergeist (which probably has the strongest connection to Djinn), and Lifeforce, Djinn is a step forward into territories such as Toolbox Murders, and his Masters of Horror episodes where he shows that he isn't very interested in retreating similar past cinematic ground that a lot of filmmakers seem to retreat to.
User Review - 4/10 by Kevin RThey said they wouldn't hurt me; but you, they're going to hurt you. A young pregnant couple move into a new apartment that is the site of some unspeakable horrific events. The spirits of the event spring onto the couple and into their lives, destroying their hopes for happiness. The demon like creature that haunts them will need to be faced directly and cut down, but will they be able to do so without harming each other? "We need to forget and move on." Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 & 2, The Mangler, Night Terrors, Mortuary, Toolbox Murders, and Spontaneous Combustion, delivers Djinn. The storyline for this picture is very straightforward with some good creepy scenes and some splashes of gore. The acting is mediocre and on par with the Paranormal Activity pictures. "I got a bone they can choke on." This was recently added to Netfix online so I decided to give it a shot this Halloween season. This was fairly disappointing but did have some redeeming creepy scenes. I wouldn't go out of my way to see this, but it wasn't a complete waste of time either. "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind." Grade: C-

User Review - 2/10 by Kenny NTobe Hooper doesn't make many movies any more. But when he does it's always something...unique. Yes, he has directed the horror masterpieces "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (one of my all time favorite films and one of the scariest films of all time) and "Poltergeist" (which introduced Zelda Rubinstein to the world and spawned the oft-imitated catchphrase "They're hereee..."), but he is also responsible for lesser known but still frightening forrays into fear "The Funhouse," "Lifeforce," and the "Eye" segment of the lost horror gem "Body Bags." Even his bad films ("The Mangler," "Crocodile") have some special thing that sets them apart from every other purveyor of nightmares. "Djinn" is in the latter category. It is the United Arab Eremite's first attempt at a mainstream horror film for the good ol' USA, and it's about a type of folk monster well known there. There's the something different that Tobe Hooper always offers in his films. Unfortunately, this movie is no different from any other B-movie out there. The on-location setting and the authentic actors would serve a better film about this monster. Overall, a huge disappointment.
