Leave your thoughts about Dinner in America.
The Irish TimesTara BradyCaustic exchanges and lopsided family dynamics make for entertaining verbal donnybrooks.
Film ThreatLorry KiktaIt’s honestly one of the best dark comedies I’ve seen in years, and I can’t wait to watch it again.
RogerEbert.comSheila O'MalleyDinner in America, written, directed, and edited by Adam Rehmeier, is a movie with anti-establishment anti-social quicksilver coursing through its veins, but at its heart it is a sweet love story, one of the sweetest in recent memory.
Paste MagazineRoger MooreRehmeier gives this conventionally unconventional romance some surprises and twists, upending expectations early on and never letting “Dinner in America” settle into “predictable.”
The Film StageJared MobarakIts content, humor, and heart all merge to deliver a piece with the potential for cult appeal that transcends the act itself. It’s a treatise on America, the blurred line between taboo and cruelty, and our collective fear of real individuality despite claims by both sides of the aisle to foster freedom. The outcasts get their day.
VarietyDennis HarveyBeyond finding a godsend in Gellner, Rehmeier gets good mileage from nearly the entire supporting cast. They grasp the slightly warped humor he’s aiming for here, hitting a suitable range of comedic notes from the deadpan to the broadly farcical.
The New York TimesConcepción de LeónThere is, perhaps, an argument to be made for representing a time and place truthfully, but because the film does not critically engage with the uglier elements of the society it portrays, these become a distraction. And a viewer might find it difficult to get sucked into the love and music story at its center.
User ReviewDawdlingPoetThis is a fun, life affirming tale about two rebellious teens who get their own back, getting even on those who've bullied them. There's plenty of very strong language, so be aware of that - the characters are quite punk rock-ish. Its a fun film, a gritty and urban film. Yes, I'd recommend this film.
User ReviewUncleWillardSort of a GG Allin lite meets his manic pixie dream girl if you have low expectations. The difference being that this pulls it off in a rather optimistic and charming way.
User ReviewGamb1t66Hey fellow kids. Do you like foul language and people being edge lords for no apparent reason? Do you like crass humour, one-dimensional bully characters, and hashtag awkward dialogue? Well gee-willikers have we got a swell old film for you... And it's all gift-wrapped in formulaic romcom tropes and conversations. All the cool kids will be calling it "punk" and "unconventional" because in reality, they know about as little as we do about what those words actually mean. Turn off your brains - you won't need 'em - and flip a big ol' bird to your parents as you consume the same mindless media that every nonconforming conformist does is a desperate attempt to be seen as "edgy".
