Erwin Strunz would prefer to only tend his beloved sweet potatoes, but a call from the employment office tears the unemployed toolmaker, who lives with his wife Erika in the arbor of his allotment garden, suddenly out of the idyll: Strunz lives on support, so he must accept every "reasonable" job, including that of the country father. Because three weeks before the election, Prime Minister Uwe Achimsen had to go to the clinic with a suspected heart attack. His wife Heide and Minister Feddersen have the brilliant idea of reactivating Achimsen's secret doppelganger Strunz--after all, he already has a certain amount of experience in the government trade. Clothes make the man, and so Strunz in Achimsen's pinstripe suit is outwardly indistinguishable from a thoroughbred politician. But in his first address, the passionate allotment gardener amazes the parliamentary group with a new menu: Sweet potatoes are the future. As in his first mission, the unemployed Strunz uses the opportunity to intervene in politics, in the interests of the common people, whose interests he sees grossly neglected by desk criminals and lobbyists. When Strunz also exposes the aggressive political opponent Heinz Buber as a producer of speech-bubbles in the TV-speech duel and called off the construction of the unpopular airport runway, he is ahead in the polls. The real Prime Minister, who slips into Strunz's role to camouflage and must endure the normal treatment of a statutory health insurance patient in the hospital, is not doing well.
