User Review - 8/10 by Christophe SThe major theme running through this PBS-affiliated investigation is that American society has all but abandoned its social contract to provide all individuals, as a public good, fair access to quality higher education. As a professor, little of this content was especially surprising, but much of it would be news to most who have not experienced it. Accordingly, this production is especially recommended as a primer for parents and students who have not yet made their college decisions. The film identifies many areas of concern ... * Why do two-thirds of students take As or Bs, when even they admit they don't work very hard to earn them? * Why is it that public institutions are asked to educate 30% more students with 40% less government funding? * Why do students attending the major public research institutions never actually see real professors? * Which students get scholarship and tuition monies, those who need it most - or those who are already advantaged - and why? * Does the big business of college athletics serve either the mission of the institution or the students it recruits? * Do college students spend more time taking advantage of the cultural activities institutions endlessly fund - or drinking & partying? * For professors is the bottom line quality instruction - or esoteric research? * Why is the higher education experience vastly superior for the 3% who attend the nation's elite private schools? * Should, or can, a professor of political science instruct hundreds of students each term in remedial writing skills? * How could an instructor ever intellectually engage a course section with an enrollment of 225 students? * Why is massive debt the new reality for the majority of students? No real answers to any of these issues offered but, again, for the uninitiated, a real eye-opener. RECOMMENDATION: If you're going to finance a small fortune to send your kids to college, have the good sense to watch this first ... and see just what you're really getting for your money.
