To make Sidney's slump all the more painful, Clifford Anderson, a student of one of Sidney's writing seminars, has recently sent his mentor a copy of his first attempt at playwrighting for Sidney's review and advice. The play, "Deathtrap", is a five character, two-act thriller so perfect in its construction that, as Sidney says, "A gifted director couldn't even hurt it." Using his penchant for plot, and out of his desperate desire to once again be the toast of Broadway, Sidney, along with Myra, cook up an almost unthinkable scheme: They'll lure the would-be playwright to the Bruhl home, kill him, and market the sure-fire script as Sidney's own. But shortly after Clifford arrives, it's clear that things are not what they seem. Even Helga Ten Dorp, a nosey psychic from next door, and Porter Milgram, Sidney's observant attorney, can only speculate where the line between truth and deception lies.

Groucho ReviewsPeter CanaveseIt would be criminal to reveal how the plot unfolds, other than to say it's impressive dramatic origami, manipulated deftly by an ideal cast and one of Hollywood's all-time top directors. [Blu-ray]
Washington PostGary ArnoldDeathtrap seems an unusually skillful and satisfying example of devious entertainment. It offers as much double-crossing amusement as one can reasonably expect from a theatrical murder mystery.
Associated PressBob ThomasDeathtrap, like many intricate stage thrillers, reveals its artifice on the screen but remains crackling good fun.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertDeathtrap is a wonderful windup fiction machine with a few modest ambitions: It wants to mislead us at every turn, confound all our expectations, and provide at least one moment when we levitate from our seats and come down screaming.
Cinema em CenaPablo VillaçaApesar do desfecho decepcionante, sobrevive graças às boas reviravoltas, à direção intrigante de Lumet e às formidáveis atuações de Caine e Reeve.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzWhat eventually shines through, is how clever and manipulative the script is.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Liam LaceyDeathtrap falls short of the classic potential it would obviously like to have. Still, it's a jaunty entertainment, by and large.
Boston GlobeBruce McCabeSidney Lumet's wired-up, hysterical direction overwhelms the minor pleasures of Ira Levin's play.
User ReviewChristopher BMysterious and cleverly funny. Chris Reeve should have been nominated for best supporting actor.
User ReviewDiana AFor me, a classic!! One of the best endings ever, and to adapt it from a play, briliant!!!
