Seattle TimesJeff ShannonAnyone can grasp the issues explored in Jonroy's comedy, and occasional missteps are easily forgiven when something new (along with a feast of great-looking food) is being brought to the table.
Los Angeles TimesMichael OrdoñaThough it's no Romeo and Juliet, David & Layla is an offbeat cross-cultural romance with a positive message.
One Guy's OpinionFrank SwietekSo clumsily made that even its hopeful message can't make it go down pleasantly.
Film Journal InternationalHarvey S. KartenThe picture takes its time in developing momentum; once attained, it becomes a watchable, optimistic cri de coeur.
San Francisco ChronicleRuthe SteinJay Jonroy, who wrote and directed David & Layla, has come up with some potentially funny material that doesn't quite work.
Miami HeraldMarta BarberHumor and politics finally converge in what the story is all about: finding the good in those different from you. It's a happy ending that can be enjoyed by all.
Arizona RepublicRichard NilsenDavid and Layla is proof, if proof be needed, that good intentions just aren't enough.
Boxoffice MagazineTim CogshellRather than a real drama about these things, David & Layla plays like '70s-era sitcom.
User ReviewKimille HThis was a really beautiful film! Full of colors, spice, and culure. People complain about how much stereotypes are present in the film, but I don't think they realize that this is based on a true story. I think the film would have been less realistic if the pressures between the different religious backgrounds had been left out. Go see the film, its well worth the 7-9 bucks.
User ReviewLauren LI was one of the lucky few Nashvillians to have seen this movie along with the director Jan Jonroy on its opening night in theaters. I have to say that the movie was inspired--not merely by a true story, but also, Jonroy's exrteme dedication to this movie. There were a select few moments where the script seemed weak, but something about this movie radiated heart, and no one can fault it for that. It's one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, and I recommend everyone to it.
