Movie Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle - 8/10 by Mick LaSalleTo an extent, the movie waters down its moral complexity by introducing a flat-out villainess, who begins to guide Jean’s actions, thus absolving Jean of some moral responsibility. Still, it’s hard to complain when the villainess is played by Jessica Chastain, the best person in the world to play a cool, coiffed, composed entity of evil, looking for a new planet for her displaced people.
Variety - 8/10 by Owen GleibermanTurner’s damaged conviction holds Dark Phoenix together, giving it a treacherous life force.
Entertainment Weekly - 8/10 by Leah GreenblattFor what is being called a final installment, it all tends to feel both anticlimactic and a little grim in the end.
Austin Chronicle - 7/10 by Richard WhittakerThere are flashes of what made the franchise work. Turner, after stumbling through the part in the rocky terrain of X-Men: Apocalypse, finally gets to grapple with the emotional complexities of a woman whose gifts are the most constant curse.
Film Threat - 7/10 by Alan NgThe final fight at the end is fantastic. It is by far the best X-Men fight in its franchise history (not counting Deadpool).
New York Post - 6/10 by Johnny OleksinskiPretty far-fetched even for a franchise about rare genetic mutations that allow people to read minds and shoot lasers with their eyes. It’s not bad, just crazy.
The Verge - 6/10 by Keith PhippsKinberg goes darker and scarier, emphasizing the tragic elements of Jean’s story by recasting her origin as a story of betrayal and deception and her possession as a condition fueled by justifiable rage. The only problem: it all works better in concept than in execution.
ReelViews - 6/10 by James BerardinelliDark Phoenix is closer to the comic book story than the previous iteration, retaining many of the core elements. Unfortunately, it suffers from a massive condensation that not only mutes the film’s emotional impact but creates an erratic tone.
Boston Globe - 6/10 by Ty BurrFor a series supposedly dedicated to the pleasure of superhero movies, Dark Phoenix somehow ends up illustrating their limits.
IGN - 6/10 by Jim VejvodaDark Phoenix is ultimately yet another fumbled take on the classic saga from the Marvel Comics, albeit one without the side plots of The Last Stand. Add to it a jarringly uneven latter half and some underdeveloped cosmic villains, and Dark Phoenix is fortunate to have not fully ended the X-Men’s current big screen run on a completely down note.
