Leave your thoughts about Cruising.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonCruising can now be ranked among Friedkin's very best films.
San Francisco ExaminerBob StephensA great film of the urban, North American night. His voyeuristic camera roams the streets that come alive with sexual promenades after sunset, and it lingers in noisy, jam-packed bars, watching men search for the man of their fantasies.
Slant MagazineEric HendersonIts truly unnerving quality is that its existence is a brutal reminder from the past that homosexuality is not heterosexuality, and that any attempt to reconcile the difference will only breed resentment, confusion, and violence. Or perhaps it will only lead to more lame Hallmark movies of the week like Brokeback Mountain.
ColeSmithey.comCole SmitheyA lot of upcoming filmmakers saw "Cruising" and took notes, because the movie became the prototype for every serial killer movie to follow (see "Se7en," "Basic Instinct" etc.).
ReelTalk Movie ReviewsDonald J. Levit'Cruising' views better today than in 1980, but that is relative. There remain bothersome errors in consistency and judgment.
Chicago TribuneKevin M. WilliamsHere's a movie that's well visualized, that does a riveting job of exploring an authentic subculture, that has a fairly high level of genuine suspense from beginning to end. . and that then seems to make a conscious decision not to declare itself on its central subject. What does Friedkin finally think his movie is about?
San Francisco ChronicleMick LaSalleOne of the most original thrillers of the 1980s. It's a lurid, twisted film that brings you into its world and completely works you over.
eFilmCritic.comRob GonsalvesIs it possible that Cruising is everything its detractors and defenders say it is?
Slant MagazineEd GonzalezBoth on a conceptual level and in practice, Cruising buys into and advances some of the most dangerous myths about homosexuality and the homosexual lifestyle.
VarietyVariety StaffTaking away the kissing, caressing and a few bloody killings, Friedkin has no story, though picture pretends to be a murder mystery combined with a study of Al Pacino's psychological degradation.
