When some Russian rebels take control of some ICBM's, the Americans mobilize. Among the vessels sent is the nuclear sub, USS Alabama. But before they leave they need a new X.O. and among the choices is Commander Hunter, who hasn't seen much action. But the ship's Captain, Ramsey, OK's him. While on the way, there was an incident and Hunter disagreed with how Ramsey handled it. It's evident that Ramsey doesn't think much of Hunter because Hunter was college educated while Ramsey worked his way up. They're given orders to attack but when they were in the process of receiving another order, the ship's communications were damaged, so the entire message was not received. Ramsey decides to continue with their previous order while Hunter wants to reestablish contact first. That's when the two men butt heads that ends with Hunter relieving Ramsey. Later when some men die, some of the officers feel that Hunter is not up to the task so they team up to retake control. But Hunter has taken precautions.
Leave your thoughts about Crimson Tide.
Internet ReviewsSteve RhodesThere is so much excellent about this picture it is hard to know where to begin.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)Chris HicksWhat really makes the film a class act, however, is that there are complex characters dealing with complicated issues and it never cops out to simplicity.
Spirituality and PracticeFrederic and Mary Ann BrussatPost-Cold War thriller set aboard a Trident ballistic nuclear submarine.
San Francisco ChronicleMick LaSalleThe submarine drama, which opens today, has everything you could want from an action thriller and a few other things you usually can't hope to expect: an excellent script, first-rate performances and a story that has more to do with individuals than explosions.
MovieCrypt.comKevin A. RansonIf this film is based on real events, we're all doomed.
Jam! MoviesBob ThompsonCrimson Tide is like that promising good-looking first date who ruins everything by talking.
JoBlo's Movie EmporiumJoBloThis film is an excellent nacho-plate movie, waiting to be enjoyed by groups of people who enjoy high-energy, macho thrillers brimming in mood, excellent actors and a unique environment.
Entertainment WeeklyOwen GleibermanDirected by Tony Scott, Crimson Tide is the kind of sumptuously exciting undersea thriller that moves forward in quick, propulsive waves.
Capital Times (Madison, WI)Rob ThomasIt's great to see a high-tech thriller that thrills because of its actors, not its special effects.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertOddly enough, Crimson Tide develops into an actors' picture, not just an action movie. There are a lot of special effects, high-tech gadgets and violent standoffs, yes, but the movie is really a battle between two wills.
