The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Rick GroenClass is a prep-school retread of "The Graduate" that knows some of its scenes are funny and some are serious, but never figures out quite how they should go together. The result is an uncomfortable, inconsistent movie that doesn't really pay off -- a movie in which everything points to two absolutely key scenes that are, inexplicably, the two most awkward scenes in the film.
Chicago TribuneVincent CanbyThe movie can't make up its mind whether it's a lighthearted comedy, set in what appears to be a posh New England-style prep school just outside Chicago, or a romantic drama about a teen-age boy who has a torrid affair with his roommate's mother. Either way it's pretty awful.
Film.comJonathan F. RichardsDirector Laurent Cantet has pulled together a story that feels startlingly authentic, using Mike Leigh-like methods of extensive improvisation with a cast of real inner-city kids and a real teacher. To paraphrase the Buck Owens/Beatles hit, all they had
User ReviewTerri Homg this movie wuz amazing!!! so many people told me to watch it so i finally did. it wuz soOo worth it. i wish i watched it yearz ago. it wuz so hard to find, i had to turn to youtube. even though itz frustrating watching a movie on ten-minute intervalz, i would watch it in hundred intervalz, if it wuz for this movie. everyone should at least watch it once. the director did an amazing job. he really captured what it would've been like at a prep skool/high skool/with a college experience galore!!!

User ReviewLisa MAndrew McCarthy is the grade-A student from a poor background. Rob Lowe is the gorgeous rich kid who drives a Porsche 911... These room mates quickly become best friends but when McCarthy starts a steamy affair with an older woman their friendship is put to the test... this film is hysterical, a real 80's classic. McCarthy is his endearing best and Rob Lowe is laugh-out-loud funny and absolutely gorgeous to boot. Some great performances from John Cuscak and Alan Ruck among others.
