Poster boy for the ruling class, Charlie Barnum has it all, the perfect wife, the property portfolio and the loyalty of his best friend. The fact that Charlie requires Viagra to have sex with his wife, is losing his properties, and has seduced his best friend's wife, means nothing to Charlie, because Charlie is living on dangerously borrowed time. An innocent working class girl is killed in a hit and run, and, as the blood pours from her injuries, Charlie, the man who knocked her down, consults his deck of playing cards and chooses to abdicate responsibility for all future deeds. Lies become truths, reality becomes fantasy, and, as Charlie embroils the three comfortable couples in the ugly excesses and sanctimonious prejudices of his new found power, they discover some deeply disturbing truths about each other. Employing dangerously subversive, provocatively dark, and satirically disturbing humor, Charlie Casanova re-imagines Billy Liar and Walter Mitty as a sickeningly compelling anti-hero, delving deep into the psychologically disturbing, shallowly suicidal, degenerately greedy needs of a group of moneyed people who had it all, threw it all away, then decided to blame the entire working class.

Movie Reviews

Little White Lies - 6/10 by Adam WoodwardIt's a trip you'll be reluctant to take twice, but as a singular vision Charlie Casanova demands a second look.
Irish Times - 4/10 by Donald ClarkeThis relentlessly one-note, indigestibly overwritten picture duplicates the experience of being trapped in a train carriage with a bore who's spent too much time at the drinks trolley.
Daily Express (UK) - 4/10 by Allan HunterIn this low-budget Irish tale Charlie Barnham (Emmett Scanlan) is a loathsome psychopath who regards the rest of humanity with sneering contempt.
CineVue - 4/10 by Russell CookThe most disappointing aspect of Charlie Casanova isn't that its plot lacks any real trajectory, or that its narrative feels so implausibly purposeless.
Guardian - 2/10 by Peter BradshawCharlie is unbearably and unintentionally obnoxious. I guess we are supposed to see some devilish charisma or glamour or wit, but he is just a tiresome prat.
Total Film - 2/10 by Neil SmithAn opinionated motormouth reveals sociopathic tendencies in an Irish micro-budgeter that's the very definition of a hard slog.
User Review - 4/10 by The DCharlie Casanova is a particularly difficult film to bare let alone review. It's very hard to know what the writer/director Terry McMahon is trying to do other than alienate his audience. Charlie is a successful business man attending a conference along with his wife & two other couples. He's an arrogant self righteous man but unbeknownst to his companions he is going under in more ways than one. He briefly comes away from the hotel to pick up cigarette papers, it's at this point he knocks over a woman but rather than stopping he drives on. As he decides the woman was working class he feels the world to be a better place without her. Charlie looks down on the working classes and regularly takes the chance to spit upon them. This is highlighted when he tries his hand at stand up comedy. There's all sorts of swordid interchanges between this six main players but all it seems to do is slag varying things off, women, classes and so forth. It's just hard work to stay interested or see Charlie as any sort of anti-hero. The films ending, I don't mind saying, I didn't follow, anyone wanting to educate me feel free. It's also difficult to rate the film with stars as I previously stated the films intent is hugely unclear from start to finish. I gave the film two stars as if it meant to annoy me then it did a bit but not enough to care.
User Review - 2/10 by Lee MA rather pointless tale about ... to be honest I don't know what this movie is supposed to be about as I gave up about half way through due to sheer boredom! I'm a big fan of Emmett Scanlon so was expecting good things, but unfortunately Scanlan's talents are not put to good use here. If you're a fan of dark violent Irish movies you'll probably enjoy this, but it didn't do anything for me and I switched it off long before it had finished.
