Cleveland PressTony MastroianniThe plot gets overly contrived as Charley proceeds to anticipate his pursuers and out-maneuver them... But even more wondrous is how Matthau manages to exude so much warmth in one of the most sadistically violent movies of the season.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonDon Siegel's excellent heist/escape movie makes an interesting juxtaposition to his Clint Eastwood films.
User ReviewRafael GA tight script and the underrated hand of Don Siegel guide this from being just any heist flick, but an exploration of fate versus skill. I fucking love this movie.
User ReviewDavid SYes! Charley Varrick, a perfect movie, is a smart clockwork-tight thriller and a forebearer of other perfect movies. Walter Mathau plays a retired stunt pilot turned crop duster (The Last of the Independents) who decides robbing banks would be more exciting than spraying yams. He gets on the wrong side of the mob, who sends evil badass Joe Don Baker to reclaim money that Varrick has stolen. That sounds routine, but talent here molds the routine into something rich and exciting. This is a great movie that commands your attention to the smallest details and rewards that attention. This is Charley Varrick.
User ReviewDavid HA fine, underrated crime thriller from the Seventies, full of dark humor and memorable characters. Plus, the plot is socko: a bank robber accidentally steals the mafia's money. Oops. Mayhem ensues, but the gum-chewing anti-hero has several tricks up his sleeve. Full of plot twists and eccentric characters, this may have been a big influence of Tarantino and David Lynch.
User ReviewEric BFantastic thriller, and one of the finest and smartest plots ever committed to film.

User ReviewBrad WThe Coen Brothers must have been inspired by this movie when they Made No Country For Old Men as there are a lot of similarities between the two films. Thats not to say its a bad thing as this is Director Don Sigeles more underated films. Walter Matthau is amazing as Varrick a Bank robber with a huge problem on his hands when he rips off a small bank containing mafia money. The mafia here is personified by Joe Don Baker as the brilliaint Hit man Molly who smokes a pipe and beats up mon guys in wheel chairs he is just as scary as Anton in No Country. Siegel fills the film with off beat characters which add to the enjoyment level and the final Denoument is top grade stuff . This film should be seen in tandem with the Coens work or on its own as another great film from the 70s
