Movie Reviews

Nick's Flick Picks - 9/10 by Nick DavisBeautiful and engaging, if factually dubious... Built, shot, and scripted to entertain literally anyone, from a 4-year-old to a nonagenarian member of its own original audience.
Old School Reviews - 8/10 by John A. Nesbitdecidedly scripted for jungle adventure to set up conflicts with the local fauna
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 8/10 by Ken HankeSuperb quasi-documentary precursor to King Kong
EmanuelLevy.Com - 8/10 by Emanuel LevyThe directors, best known for the the seminal 1933 King Kong, received for their jungle docudrama an Oscar nomination for Unique and Artistic Picture.
The Spectator - 7/10 by Celia SimpsonThe cinema has here brilliantly fulfilled a part for which it is better fitted than any other artistic medium. No book, painting, musical impression or circus could give so adequate and vivid a picture of the jungle.
Goatdog's Movies - 6/10 by Michael W. Phillips, Jr.It's of dubious ethnographical importance, but it is certainly entertaining.
User Review - 10/10 by Shane OIf you are a movie fan, this is a great one currently available on Netflix. I loved it; it's like taking a trip back in time with Monkey pets. Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness (1927) is a documentary film about a poor farmer in Isan (Thailand) and his daily struggle for survival in the jungle. The two directors of Chang, Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, had previously worked together on Grass (1925) and later collaborated on the blockbuster film King Kong (1933).
User Review - 8/10 by Dave Ja pseudo-documentary film made by merian c. cooper in thailand when it was still called siam, it's the story of one family's fight for survival on the edge of the jungle. cooper used actual natives and many wild animals, tho some scenes, like the finale, were staged. it's a silent film , with colorful hand-tinting in many scenes and a soundtrack of thai music. this was a sort of dry run for king kong but it's a great adventure film in it's own right. caution: animals are slaughtered
User Review - 8/10 by David LChang: A Drama of the Wilderness lacks focus and is too short, but it is a groundbreaking early documentary feature with excellent direction from Cooper and Schoedsack, a couple of wonderful and brilliantly filmed sequences, great score and fascinating scenery.
User Review - 8/10 by Bill TA wonderful insight into the history of the place I now call home. For its time the cinematography is wonderful. The making of the movie must have been grueling but the use of so many native people and animals made it all worthwhile.
