Leave your thoughts about Chan Is Missing.
The New York TimesVincent CanbyChan Is Missing is not only an appreciation of a way of life that few of us know anything about; it's a revelation of a marvelous, completely secure new talent.
Film Comment MagazineJonathan RomneyWang makes Chan Is Missing to a similar recipe-the film is imbued with, and is entirely about, Chinese-ness, but adopts a quintessentially American form, the film noir mystery.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertThe movie has an unforced, affectionate sense of humor about its characters.
Village VoiceSimon AbramsViewers must ultimately draw their own conclusions about Chan's identity, making Chan Is Missing a classic, albeit unsolvable, brainteaser.
EmpireIan FreerWhat matters is the affection Wang has for his characters and the portrait of assimilation represented by the characters the amateur sleuths encounter. Whimsical, certainly, but also generous, insightful and funny.
Filmcritic.comChristopher Nullwhat develops isn't a mystery, but rather a look at the city from the inside out.
User ReviewEmily DThis film somehow manages to mash together a beautiful portrait of San Francisco, and a sometimes humorous, continually apt mediation on inter-generational identity.
User ReviewSam Mwatched this movie as part of an transpacific American art history class that explored some expression within film by transpacific movie directors. I thought this movie was moving as well as very though provoking--never having grown up in a Chinatown myself, having a view of what life might have been like for me was the "moving" part. Thought provoking comes with the search for Chan and how Marc is on a mad search for a friend that he thought he knew, but, realizes, that he really doesn't. The movie provides insight into Asian American life as well as the struggle of the community to try and make ends meet.
User ReviewViet None of the best films that i've ever seen in my life... and it doesn't portray asian americans as kung fu fighters, nerds, or some other sorry-ass racist stereotype. well done wayne wang... you're awesome. oh, and i forgot. watch this film now!
