User ReviewJorge GThe alternate universe where magic is common ... a kinda darkish movie ... I want to own this one on DVD
User ReviewLarry YQuirky, innovative, and fun. One of the few "urban fantasy" films ever made. It's a hidden gem and one of my personal favorite movies. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but if you like films like Buckaroo Banzai, Forbidden Zone, and O Lucky Man, I highly recommend checking this out (if you can find it).
User ReviewA M HMy favourite film ever. It's Lovecraft that I have seen at it's best. All my friends that are fans of the horror genre (especially Cthulhu) have been convinced to watch it, and now have copies of their own. : )
User ReviewGinger DA brilliant movie taking a Lovecraft-feel but with a noir world where magic is real and day to day. Fred Ward truly makes a wonderful private eye, and equally grand acting from Julianne Moore and David Warner. If you like this find the sequel starring an older Lovecraft played by Denis Hopper called Witchhunt.
User ReviewMichael MMy dream world that I desperately wish to live in.
User ReviewMartin KA wittuyu and elegant playful amalgam of Lovecraftian and film noir themes. This film appeals to both the cinematic and literary fan, chockfull of in jpkes and references, but is still accessinle to a broad audience. It deserves a reissue...
User ReviewBill GBetween the cheap but effective SFX, the noir tropes and the performances, this movie was a damn lot of fun and probably the best one based on the Cthulhu Mythos I've seen. Which can't be too many.
User ReviewKeith CThis was an HBO movie production, and it's one of my favorites. A revisionist history set in post-war L.A., Fred Ward portrays H. Phil Lovecraft, hard-boiled detective who is honest as the day is long, and has no truck with magic. Toss in the Necronomicon, a tarty virgin, an ex-partner-turned-hood and a young and delicious Julianne Moore and you've got a tasty, magical stew.
User ReviewMatthew GA truly unique film noir. A fantasy world set in the 40's where everyone but our lead detective uses magic. Lots of nods towards famous horror people as character names, cameos from vampires, werewolves, gremlins, etc and all sorts of creepy gooey demon creatures. Combine this with a very campy/charming feel and some remarkably well done special effects and you got yourself a very underrated classic that, despite some pacing issues warrants a watch! Plus, David Warner just makes any movie better, especially in anything involving Lovecraft material.
User ReviewJosh LPretty much right up my alley. Film noir w/ Lovecraft horror and magic. Took me forever to finally watch it, now I'm going to check out Witch Hunt.
