EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyDeemed harsh in 1950, Cromwell's melodrama about women in prison has lost its edge but the acting of Agnes Moorehead and Hope Emerson, as a monstrously facist matron, is good; the film still offers valuable lesson about how life in prison makes criminals
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzRanked as the best women-in-prison film ever made, but even if this is so it still doesn't make it very good.
User ReviewWolfman T5 Star Movie, The California prison system run by corrupt politicians and government unions with good lifetime benefits are run the same way today no wonder the state is broke
User ReviewKevin M. WA brilliant example of film noir. One of the best prison/institution films ever made. Right up there with One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and Shawkshank Redemption.
User ReviewDana FThe best of the ladies in prison films, this one is hard hitting tale of a naive girl as she goes through countless let downs and about the middle of the movie, was shown as tough as nails woman. Powerful study, with a great cast, watch for Ellen Corby (Grandma on the Waltons) is a delight as a comedic part.
User ReviewBruce WEarly women`s prison flick demanding a re-watch very soon. Starring Eleanor Parker of "Sound of Music" fame.
User ReviewMike KAmazing movie. Hope Emerson will never leave your mind..... She deserved the Oscar.
User Reviewdarryl cthis film may be camp to some, but i still get chills from it. eleanor parker is compelling as the innocent marie. her transformation from guiless innocent to hardened whore-to-be is amazing. agnes moorhead is her usual great self as the venerable warden of the women's prison and emerson is a fright as the bull dyke matron harper. bringing up the end with the acting are betty garde, jan sterling, ellen corby, lee patrick and gertrude michael, just to name a few. the best surprises are van upp's acid-hot screenplay and dialogue and max steiner's sparse yet highly effective scoring.
User ReviewGraceann MEleanor Parker gives a tour de force performance in this women in prison film. There are campy moments, but mostly it's gritty and disturbing. Pair this with The Snake Pit for a truly creepy evening.
User ReviewPastry Chef David BThe ultimate women-in-prison movie. realistic, gritty, campy & great acting!! watch eleanor parker go from scared innocent to the been there done it tough b*itch she ends up. lots of lesbian undertones & suggestion. Awesome!
