Captain Haddock, a detective from the Bunco Squad, recounts what is referred to as "The Case of the Gullible Woodpecker". Woody has just inherited a large sum of money from an unspecified individual, and confidence man Buzz Buzzard enacts an elaborate scheme to steal all of Woody's money which involves luring Woody to a deserted island with the promise of buried treasure and making him pay ludicrous amounts of money for petty items like keys.
