Movie Reviews

Slant Magazine - 8/10 by Fernando F. CroceThe usually meek Robert Wise trades his chameleonic tastefulness for full-on, jazzy misanthropy in this nasty melodrama.
Lessons of Darkness - 8/10 by Nick SchagerCompetent if slightly too tame for a supposedly sleazy story.
Reel Film Reviews - 8/10 by David Nusair...a fairly typical film-noir premise that's employed to watchable yet entirely unmemorable effect by Robert Wise...
User Review - 10/10 by Veronique Ka story enhanced by murder and deceit. and the best thing in this movie shall be claire trevor's performance as the ambitious, complicated seductress who is in eternal struggle between the crave of peace and security and the longing for strength, excitement and corruptness. naturally this ambivalence is anchored by her choices of men: the rich loyal fred and the shrewd ferocious sam(lawrence tierney). besides the warobe of miss trevor in this movie is dynamically femme fatale to delineate the iceberg women with the coldest surface and rottenest inside. one of the pleasure for the film noir aficinados is the savor of its dialogues of cynical wisecrackers which reflects the simmering irony of life. and this one shall have one of the best scripts. for example. "life is coffee, the aroma is always better than its actuality"....besides it's also the best chance to take a glance over the young lawrence tierney (one of the coolest original tough guys)whose youthful dashing looks matches his razor-sharp toughness.
User Review - 10/10 by Chris .Having seen this twice, I can honestly say Lawrence Tierney gives perhaps one of the best performances in a Film-Noir ever. And the movie itself is fucking fantastic.
User Review - 10/10 by Patrick SSuperb, literate, beautifully directed '40s film noir. Both startlingly un-dated and a product of its time. Masterful.
User Review - 8/10 by Shannon SI was so drawn into this movie. The raw sexual energy coming from Sam is unreal, at once dangerous and intoxicating. His pride issues get annoying and unrealistic, but he is a man who knows what he wants and takes it. There was something in the woman's character that spoke to me as well, a susceptibility to evil and cold-heartedness that must be fought off or else you lose your soul. Goodness me though, some hot scenes between the forbidden lovers and I really enjoyed the depth of characters and tense action. Good good good.
User Review - 8/10 by John D7.5/10. Great classic film noir, Esther Howard is amazing in a supporting role as a tough older woman. The entire cast is excellent. Good cinematography and screenplay. Fine direction and a superb score.
User Review - 8/10 by Matthew DFor 1947 film-making, "Born to Kill" is *VERY* racy. A chance meeting between socialite cum Reno show girl Helen Brent [Clare Trevor] and social deviant/aberrant Sam Wild [Lawrence Tierney] slowly sends the pair -- along with anyone associated with them -- down the path towards homicide, self-depravity, and sadomasochism. Case in point: witness the climactic love scene between Trevor and Tierney in which Tierney vividly describes how he killed two people to excite Trevor's passions -- as she excitedly submits. Though tame by present standards, this is still hot stuff, considering it was made within the constraints of post-WWII and pre-HUAC cinema. Lawrence Tierney is perfect as the appropriately-named Sam Wild, and Clare Trevor is, as always, her sexy and seductive self. But, there are some glaring problems that keep the film from being called a true classic. For starters, Philip Terry does a horrific job in his supporting performance as Trevor's fiance. There are, literally, several scenes with Terry in which Claire Trevor must carry the intensity of the scene by herself because she is not getting any help from Terry. Furthermore, Director Robert Wise -- though adventurous in making such a movie -- still plays it safe with the subject matter: he is, obviously, testing the deep-end of the pool but you get the sense that Wise is always keeping one foot firmly planted on solid ground. Still, Trevor and Tierney's performances, alone, makes this film a must see for film noir fans.
