The New York Times - 8/10 by Howard ThompsonWhat hoists the picture into real substance toward the home stretch is an eerie and fascinating by credible sequence with the Barker clan holding as captive a blindfolded millionaire, strongly played by Pat Hingle.
Empire - 8/10 by Kim NewmanA lurid gothic gangster psychodrama from Roger Corman, this is Shelley Winters’ finest hour-and-a-half, cast as Arizona Clark ‘Ma’ Barker, a role it would be impossible to overplay.
Chicago Reader - 7/10 by Dave KehrRoger Corman's 1970 retelling of the story of Ma Barker and her three loony sons in Depression-era America is completely out of control, but the smash-and-grab stylistics are exhilarating.
User Review - 10/10 by Ross MThis is Roger Corman going wild making a gangster film not a true to life biopic and in true Corman fasion it is a bloody, violent mess. Carrying a strangely surreal tint, it is a crazy and uneven film, whilst some of the dialogue remains strangely insightful. For these reasons, I love it.
User Review - 8/10 by Al MBloody Mama is a delightfully deranged piece of early-70s Corman. As with most Corman films, Bloody Mama is B-movie to the core--it is cheep and makes up for its lack of money by incorporating a variety of exploitative elements: violence, nudity, etc. all parade before the camera. But Bloody Mama is a psychological gangster/outlaw film that will delight Corman and B-Movie cinema fans as well as perhaps surprising a few "normal" viewers/ Twisted to its core, Bloody Mama is a Freudian, Oedipal tale of a mother's influence over a family as well as a critique of the American ideal that we can all become whatever we want. It is a delightfully violent and psychopathic tale that features a poignant and brutal performance from Shelley Winters as well as a childlike, drug-addict Robert DeNiro. A truly fun film that I enjoyed way more than Michael Mann's star-studded Public Enemies.
User Review - 8/10 by Senor CShelly Winters at her finest. Corman has a gift with bringing you into his films. Can't wait to see more. De Niro is great, but you've got to give a big hand for Don Stroud and Shelly Winters dynamic. Yet another great film from one of the greatest eras in film making.
User Review - 8/10 by El Duderino PVery good. This is an early film that Robert Deniro stars in and Roger Corman directs. Based on a true story. Pretty f@#ked up, but good acting and actors.
User Review - 8/10 by Stephanie WProduced and directed by Roger Corman, this crime exploitation film was based on the life of Kate Barker, who along with her family was part of a violent crime spree in the American mid-west in the 1930's. Corman's version was shot fast and cheap on location in Arkansas, and it's a spirited and graphically violent caper film, but Corman has a good cast to work with here. Kate 'Ma' Barker (Shelley Winters) had a troubled upbringing where she was beaten by her brothers and father, but what didn't kill her made her stronger, and by the 1930's, she has 4 sons, Arthur (Clint Kimbrough), Herman (Don Stroud), Fred (Robert Walden) and Lloyd (Robert De Niro). After she leaves her husband George (Alex Nicol), Ma decides to make her fortune by robbing banks, with her sons carrying out the crime. After Fred and Herman are jailed for a robbery gone awry, Ma recruits experienced gunman Kevin (Bruce Dern) to help get them out of jail, and continue their crime spree. But the lawmen are closing in, and Ma is living on borrowed time. Corman states Bloody Mama to have been his finest film, and it has some good moments of action. Think of this one as a Grindhouse version of Public Enemies, and you're just about there. It's worth seeing De Niro as Ma's heroin addicted younger son, a role he lost 30 pounds in weight for, but Winters is amazing.
