The New York TimesAndy WebsterIt’s all very solemn, convoluted and a bit bloody, but not engrossing, despite impressive cinematography by Jasmin Kuhn and Mr. dela Torre and the best efforts of a hard-working cast.
Village VoiceRob StaegerFewer cops and more full-tilt vampire batshittery might not have resulted in a more coherent movie, necessarily, but almost certainly would've made for a more captivating one.
Los Angeles TimesMartin TsaiDela Torre tinkers with some of the undead's best-known traits, yet his reinvented wheel still feels like a retread.
Sacramento News & ReviewJim LaneThings are so cheap they didn't even spring for uniforms for the so-called cops; everybody seems to be wearing their street clothes.
User ReviewJudd TThis is the second Dela Torre film I've seen, and as with his first, the mood is dark and brooding. There are surprises at every turn, strong camera work, cool sound, and great performances. Dirty cops, vampires, and a hot, scary femme fatale at the center. Can't go wrong here!
User ReviewSteven SThis was a great movie! It's a very refreshing take on the age old tale of vampires with a modern twist. The camera work is fantastic and the well rounded characters keep you hooked throughout the movie. Jamie Harris especially steals the film as Bill. A great movie with a well-rounded cast.
User ReviewAlex JBLOOD RANSOM is the refreshing new spin the Vampire-film genre needed - dela Torre masterfully blends a gorgeous 70's film-noir look with an exhilarating, sexy feel. This is the film that Vampire-cinema needed to prove that there is still very much life left in the "undead" genre. Anne Curtis and Alexander Dreymon sizzle on screen, making this film as steamy as it is bloody!
User ReviewMark BHere's the headline: This is how a vampire movie should be. Flaws? Yes, but it makes the film better. Blood Ransom is a tense, vampire thriller that has as much existential philosophy as it does blood. And it has a LOT of blood. You would think a film with so much thought would be a hit with the art-house critics but a bomb with the movie goer. You would be exactly wrong. While critical reviews seem to yawn at the film, fan reviews all seem to give it high marks and I agree. This is a good film. What you get is a journey into the mind of Francis Dela Torre. Dela Torre creates a tense world where vampires love, feel, plot and are real characters. The film is beautiful, especially considering tis is a low-budget film, and the casting is spot on. Caleb Hunt makes a creepy, yet compellingly "human", vampire and Jamie Harris steals the show. Yes, the film has some flaws, as the mainstream critics point out. But it's worth it. It makes the film real, it makes the story compelling, the characters life like, and most of all, like the characters in the film, it gives you a choice. If you want a thinking movie-- you got that. If you want a monster movie-- you got that too. You can enjoy it either way. And I think that's what threw the critics off. It's good looking and has a brain.
User ReviewRoman WBlood Ransom gives us a new perspective on modern day vampires. Anne Curtis' mesmerizing gaze keeps you wanting more. The onscreen attraction of Anne and Alexander Dreymon is instant and you won't stop routing for them. The movies approach of telling the story through the narrator and pictures, gives it a classic feel. This film is absolutely worth anyone's time.
User ReviewTriston WAnne Curtis' gaze is hypnotizing - this film had all the moments (and blood!) you want to see in a dark supernatural thriller, and if that sounds like your type of film, you have GOT to see Blood Ransom!
