DVDTalk.comDavid CorneliusAn interesting example of Hollywood message movies of the 30s and a curious snapshot of a star on the rise.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzA gripping social drama based on the newspaper headlines of the day.
User ReviewJere MPowerful story that is superbly performed. This subject is still relevant 70 years later.
User ReviewMichael UI love Bogey. This great antifascist flick was his first lead role.
User ReviewGreg WA well-shot, well-acted film with a socially provocative screenplay. It was surprisingly relevant for present day America as it contains some pretty realistic depictions of ultra-conservative propaganda. Interesting how prejudice and discrimination have not much altered since 1937.
User ReviewTodd NWhile I think the plot is oversimplified, the choice to have the protagonist be a character that is seduced by Klu Klux Klan hate is daring and more revealing about the resentments and fears that lead to hate than many more sophisticated stories that only look at it from the outside. It gives us just enough of a look at a father and husband to care about the man, then it takes him down a dark path. The movie is filled with moral tragedy and it has the courage not to have a just but very un-formulaic ending for the time, or even for today.
User ReviewWilliam WA really different film and role for Humphrey Bogart, as he gets passed over for promotion to a foreigner and decides to join a thinly-veiled (pardon the pun) cloaked organization to gain some vengeance. His acting is getting better and you can tell he's just a couple of roles away from superstardom.

User ReviewNicolas AGood movie, makes you think twice before you do something
User ReviewPrivate UI've been waiting a long time to see this one on DVD and I wasn't disappointed. Bogie is Bogie here in his first real staring role. Didn't like the Hollywood ending though. Maybe it was based on the real thing, but still seemed tacked on to me.
