Movie Reviews

Film Threat - 9/10 by Lorry KiktaThe cast in this film is incredible. Hugo Weaving transforms from a reprehensible villain to a heroic champion with grand ease. James Frecheville's seething intensity and mastery of physical acting is a sight to behold.
Guardian - 8/10 by Peter BradshawIt is a harrowingly effective film, though flawed by the actions of Weaving’s officer being unconvincingly motivated at the end, and perhaps born of an emollient screenwriting need to split the difference between the Irish avenger-hero and his enemies.
Financial Times - 8/10 by Nigel AndrewsThe story glums along earnestly for 100 minutes that seem, and possibly were, 100 days.
New York Times - 8/10 by Glenn KennySince this is a rare feature film to treat the Irish famine, it’s a little odd that it tilts so heavily toward a genre exercise. But as a genre exercise, it’s pretty potent.
The Arts Desk - 8/10 by Veronica LeeBlack 47 is a gripping and unusual drama none the less.
The List - 8/10 by Angie ErrigoThere is no denying the power of this affecting, artful history lesson and tribute to Celtic tenacity in the style of a lean, mean western.
Vice - 8/10 by Karen HanLean, mean, and singular in the way it mixes genres as well as in its subject matter.
WBAI Radio - 8/10 by Prairie MillerDaly crafts his poetic, visually haunting and melancholy yet defiantly triumphant epic as brilliantly adapted classic storytelling, the western. Reinventing the bleak axiom: history is written or rather courageously resurrected - by principled filmmakers.
Film Ireland Magazine - 8/10 by Emma DonnellyDid it hit the target? Not quite, but there's a wealth of things to enjoy nonetheless.
RTÉ (Ireland) - 8/10 by Harry GuerinLike Feeney, this story takes no prisoners, with the narrative pitching two desperate men against each other for nothing more than another day's survival amidst all the devastation.
