In a land of living machines, two young ones are chosen to seek the legendary Mask of Light to reveal the savior of all the lands from the dark forces of the Makuta. During the course of their adventure, they will call on the heroes of their people, the great Toa. | User ReviewCkim FIt was great for it's time and for the crowd it was pointed at. It had great plot, great animation, and cool action, but there was a problem. The problem was it was pointed at only a specific crowd that read the books only. The rest of the people that watched it had no idea what it was about. They started their series off right at the beginning of a crisis. The only way to know what was going on was to either read the books or just watch the 2 other movies that came after it. |
| User ReviewAlexander CTime for me to nerd out. Bionicles were my favorite toy growing up. Me and my brothers would always get the latest, and play with them constantly. We would read the Bionicle comics that LEGO would send out every month, and read the novels that were written. We were Bionicle nerds, so of course, this movie means a lot to me. Back in 2003, there was nothing cooler than the idea that Bionicle was being made into a movie. I loved this movie from the very first time I saw it. The story is of the island of Mata Nui. The island is protected by six Toa, Tahu the Toa of Fire, Lewa the Toa of Air, Gali the Toa of Water, Pohatu the Toa of Stone, and Onua the Toa of Earth. They protect the island from Makuta. Makuta is the brother of the island's god Mata Nui. Mukuta wants to keep is brother asleep, so he can continue to rule the island. But one day, two matoran named Jaller and Takua find a mask of light. The light is pointing a certain way, so Jaller and Takua are sent to find where the light leads. If they do, this might mean the end to Makuta's power, so he sends his sons, the Rahkshi to stop them. The Toa help Jaller and Takua along the way to finding their destiny. Direct to video animated movies usually aren't ever "deep" or have any meaning. But this movie preaches the virtues of Unity, Duty, and Destiny. It really focuses on the Destiny part, with our main character coming to terms with the fact that he can make a difference. The animation in this isn't that great. It gets better as the trilogy goes along, but here, it could use work. But the locations are great, from the fire city of Ta-koro, to the trees of Le-koro, this movie does have some great visuals. The musical score by Nathan Furst is probably the favorite score of my childhood. I always get a charge out of hearing the main theme played over the end credits. All things being considered, this is probably the most important and beloved movie of my childhood. It is a movie for the fans, it isn't for everyone. But there were so many fans back in the day, that this movie became one of the top grossing DVD's of 2003. It was not made to suit everyone, but for fans of the franchise, this is a must. "United, we embraced out duty. Light found itself and illuminated our destiny. A city of The Great Spirit, my island home, re-found. New legends awake, but old lessons must be remembered. This is the way...of The Bionicle." 10/10 |
