amNewYorkRobert LevinAll one need do is experience the emotion evident in every bar sung by the Long Island-raised Piano Man to understand the Mets' inextricable place at New York's heart.
DeciderBenjamin H. SmithIt's cheap, gushy and sentimental, but it works. Kind of reminds me of a Billy Joel song.
New York TimesStephen HoldenGuaranteed to put lumps in the throats of longtime New York residents and suburbanites, especially Long Islanders, this fist-pumping, backslapping film is, first and foremost, an up-close record of Mr. Joel's two Shea Stadium concerts.
Time OutDavid FearThe show eloquently chronicled the end of an era; in terms of doing justice to what the loss meant to New York and beyond, this sappy, sloppy souvenir can barely make it to first base.

Lots of great music, fun and surprises! Having Paul McCartney there is a fitting touch to saying good bye to historic place! LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL! |
User ReviewAndrew ROn the surface this movie appears to be a concert film of Billy Joel's concert at Shea Stadium before it was taken apart and replaced by Citi Field. However, director Paul Crowder meticulously crafts this documentary as a love song to New York told through the eyes of the people who experienced Shea Stadium and told with the sounds of Billy Joel's brilliant songwriting. Narrated by Alec Baldwin, Last Play At Shea takes you through the history of Shea Stadium while also telling the story of Joel's career. From the Beatles playing in the 60s all the way to September 11th, Shea Stadium represented so much to many New Yorkers. The stories told are those of genuine heartfelt emotion and Crowder masterfully succeeds in connecting with his audience. This is a must see for anybody who loves sports, anybody who loves New York, anybody who loves Billy Joel's music, and anybody who loves the human spirit.
User ReviewChris AAwesome! Totally relevant. You missed it in the theater. Don't be a fool and miss it on DVD.
