Movie Reviews

The Spectator - 8/10 by Penelope HoustonScrambled technique has the effect of a series of evasive mannerisms, to keep anyone from meeting the story head-on.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 8/10 by Ken HankeA clever, brisk, entertaining spy picture that has a lot more Ken Russell in it than you might suspect.
Chicago Sun-Times - 5/10 by Roger EbertIt is a spy movie that commits the unforgivable sin of losing track of its plot.
User Review - 10/10 by Louis FEveryone who has reviewed this movie negatively is a retard. This movie kicks ass. It's full of excellent twists and turns. General Midwinter is one of the greatest movie villains of all time. Michale Caine is great as is Karl Malden. This movie is as good as gets when it comes to spy movies. It's sad that all anyone can do is compare it Bond. Thankfully, I am blissfully ignorant of most of the Bond films, save 2 or 3 I've seen here and there over the years. It's seems like you are all defending some campy cartoon. You'd rather have michael caine in a tuxedo drolly dishing out one liners with running through campy villain hideouts to fight even campier villains? What's great about this movie is the message. You'd think that some crazy ass Texan who wants to destroy communism would get a little help from world governments, but no, this movie is about maintaining the status quo. It's so good. You are all fools who don't like this movie. You can all go to hell.
User Review - 10/10 by Hugh PThis film gets an added star as when I was searching for it on Facebook discovered there is a film called 'The Billion Dollar Hobo'
User Review - 8/10 by Greg W#3 in the harry palmer spy series Caine is awesome as the spy harry palmer
User Review - 8/10 by Art SMichael Caine is back as the be speckled spy Harry Palmer in this third outing in the series (two more films would be made with Caine about 30 years later). The film is directed by Ken Russell, who later made a name for himself with films focused around his obsession with sexuality and the church, but Russell apparently was contractually required to direct the film even though he didn't want the job. However, the end product is just about as visually arresting as any of Russell's films (even if they are missing his usual themes and subject matter) and even includes a nice Eisenstein reference, so it would seem that he was having some fun. The film was also beautifully shot by Billy Williams, who would later go on to shoot several more Russell film up to the 1990s. The story involves Palmer hunting the title brain, which is really a super computer (which is really an ancient Honeywell computer) from an anti-commie extremist who wants to start a war with the Russians. It's a snappy, fun spy film and I would say is clearly the best of the Harry Palmer films. Well worth watching for 1960s spy film fans!
User Review - 8/10 by Tuomas SMichael Caine Helsingissä. Hyvä Suomi!
User Review - 8/10 by Stuart Kthe third and final Harry Palmer film, this one failed to make an impact on the box-office. But, Harry Saltzman found a brilliant director to do this one, Ken Russell!! :D Although it's not as over the top and mad as what Russell's later films were, it's certainly a better film than Funeral In Berlin, and it does feel more like a James Bond film in tone and structure. The plot is quite eccentric, but it's well made and is visually arresting. Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) is given orders by an automated phone call to take a flask of eggs to Helsinki, Finland. There, he meets an old friend, Leo Newbiggin (Karl Malden) and his squeeze Anya (Françoise Dorléac). It is there that Palmer learns of a plan to liberate Latvia from Soviet domination by mad Texas oil billionaire General Midwinter (Ed Begley) all with the aid of a huge supercomputer, known as the Billion Dollar Brain. It's well shot and Russell has fun with the big set pieces within this film, Finland in winter looks lovely, and Caine is on top form again, although the film goes a little bonkers once Midwinter comes into the fold. But, it makes a good finale to the Palmer films, (save for a couple of TV Movies in the mid 1990's), it's a pity they didn't make any more.
