A drunken self-destructive woman called Betty wanders through bars and meets a man that drives her to a restaurant outside Paris called Le Trou (The Hole). She meets the middle-aged alcoholic Laure from Lyon, who is the lover of the Le Trou's owner Mario. Laure decides to take care of Betty and brings her to the room next-door in her hotel. | User ReviewArin DA decidedly odd character study. We never find out why the elegant alcoholic, Laure, adopts Betty, a drunken wastrel she picks up from a seedy bar called The Hole. Neither do we discover why Betty is the way she is. Like many of Chabrol's female leads, she remains mysteriously opaque. We watch in a kind of fascinated horror as she smokes, drinks herself into a stupor, and sleeps with any man who attempts to pick her up. Why? Well, Chabrol provides clues but no answers. The twist, when it comes, is also entirely unexpected. What drives us to watch this film, is, in fact, largely curiosity. Nothing is what it seems, nobody is quite what they appear to be. Marie Trintignant is, of course, marvellous as Betty, a cold-as-ice seductress, fatally attractive because of her seeming helplessness. |
| User ReviewSilke BWhat is it, that makes those french movies always look sexy to me? No matter how sad and boring the story is, I'm always expecting some hot scenes. Here it is Marie Trintignant, with her bedroom eyes and her heavy heart, that I suspected to lure the woman she went home with into bed. Well, I was so wrong. She is drinking and attending bars because of her tragic story. And what a story that is! Loss, loneliness, alkoholism, sex affairs...-I would say: just another weak character, just too afraid to escape it's miserable bourgeois life. Even as the story comes to an end, she is not able to make a choice and build a new life, she just steals the life from the other woman, her milieu, even her lover... There is at least one good thing in this movie: the dialogues are very sophisticated and remote from everydays life. |
