In 1965, in Northern Spain, a dam will be built to bring progress to the location of Desbaria and the town of Marienbad is near to be completely flooded. Two boys, Teo and Luis, cross the security boundary to play in the evacuated town and Teo listen to voices in the abandoned church. They find a group of strange people chained in the watered basement, Teo releases their leader Mordecai Salas and is killed by him. Forty years later, in the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Debaria Dam, the teenager Antonio vanishes in the lake while swimming with his girlfriend Susana and their friend Clara Borgia. The police divers, with the support of the outsider cameraman journalist Dan Quarry that is filming the submerged Marienbad to write a matter about the town, try unsuccessfully to find the body. When eerie things happen in the spot, Dan and the local journalist and daughter of the builder of the dam Teresa Borgia disclose dark secrets about Marienbad, Salas and his evil cult of the power of the flame.

ESplatterLucius GoreNot as horrible as some of the direct-to-DVD stuff hitting shelves, but a weak movie all the same.
DVDTalk.comScott WeinbergYou'd think a southern-fried stew full of Lovecraft, Carpenter and Spielberg influences would make for a fairly decent way to spend 91 minutes. Nope.
User ReviewMarcello AA more subtle and atmospheric offering, than one might expect from the exploitation hero Brian Yuzna! It is not as bust-a-gut insane as his other films, and it revolves rather on atmosphere than balls-to-the-wall gore drenched, sleaze ridden madness (which, don't get me wrong is wonderful, as well). The film revolves around a diabolic Crowley-esque sect, who has unleashed infernal horrors upon a small & peaceful Spanish coastal town. As two unsuspecting journalists uncover some awful truths about the town's past, infernal terrors awake and soon the once peaceful town turns into an uncontrolled debauched, demon infested, orgy ridden mayhem! Interesting to see Yuzna using CG for the first time, and it looks great, just as good in fact, if not even better than Hollywood films that cost 100 times more (what do those spoilt, rich clowns waste all their money on anyway?). Screaming Mad George is sadly no longer helming the prosthetic make-up fx, but Yuzna has found a worthy heir; the prosthetic make up fx is as elaborate, delirious and demonic as ever! The Crowley-esque orgy finale is delivered with a euphoric, almost pubescent zeal for the subversive and delightfully shocking!
User ReviewValerie OPoor acting and an irritatingly standard soundtrack don't detract from what is possibly the best example of practical FX done right in modern times! It has puppets, models and even a sequence that is perfectly Indiana Jones face melt! I loved it! If you want a movie, it's around a two star flick, but if you want to see amazing FX check it out.
User ReviewMariaWell, I Dunno Wa Yu Guys Think About It Or Think It Bad. Cuz I Saw Many Bad Comments About This Movie Lol But For Me This Movie Was Pretty Cool =] (Y)
User ReviewRobert HWhile somewhat original, the plot did tend to be a tad predictable. Luckily, as is Yuznaz's style, there was plenty of great deaths and lots of gore to go round. Beneath Still Waters is classic Yuzna and that my friends, is a good thing. Unfortunately, the film still rings true of most direct-to-video low budget horror flicks and as such, doesn't quite delivery the punch you might like. If you're looking for slick looking horror, look elsewhere. Beneath still Waters is old school and it looks the part. Worth checking out compared to most flicks you'll find on VOD or rental shelves.
User ReviewRodney WA great dose of Lovecraftian horror and gory makeup, albeit by way of Limburger-quality acting and digital effects. Still, enjoyable for what it is.
User ReviewLee .This movie was ok for a deversion. I'd only recomend watching it if it was redone. It has good potential.
User Reviewsarina tIts hardly a classic, but this little ghost flick has a lot going for it. The acting is soso and the script needed a bit of work, but the scares come well timed and the atmosphere and effects are great. Worth a look.
User ReviewBrian SBrian Yuzna combines the films "Dagon" and "Warlock" to create a combination of the films "Dagon" and "Warlock." It's not bad, even if it is about as derivative as they come. The acting ranges from passable to entertainingly cheezy as do the special effects. There's some good gore here and plenty of references to the occult to keep those with such interests entertained. Veering somewhat away from Lovecraftiana, Yuzna this time uses a good deal of Aleister Crowley's mystical fiction as a point of departure and then flies away liberally with it. It's all quite predictable but it does convey the sense of depraved glee that typifies much of Yuzna's work, particularly when it comes to cannibalism and a party gone out of bounds in some of the most over-the-top ways you're likely to see in a film that squeaked in with an R rating. Will it scare you? Probably not. Will it shock you? Well, maybe a little. Will it keep you watching? Most likely. It is, at least, internally consistent enough and with a relatively simple plot that won't leave you guessing too much. Brainless horror entertainment that might just keep you from swimming in reservoirs created to flood old Spanish towns taken over by black magicians... and hey, is that really such a bad idea? If you liked "Dagon" and "Warlock," you'll like "Beneath Still Waters," too. Just don't expect too much from it.
