Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertIf Beat the Devil puzzled audiences on its first release, it has charmed them since.
Chicago ReaderDave Kehrhe film ranges from the diffident to the grotesque, with Huston selecting his lenses to make the performers look as freakish as possible.
FlavorwireJason BaileyIt operates under the assumption that everyone in it is drunk, lusty, a little crooked, and a little crazy, and once you tune in to their wavelength, it's fun to just hang out with them for an hour and a half.
User ReviewRiley HI think that this film is about the fallible nature of humankind, and are willingness to put on airs, and believe them but mostly are genuine inability to do much of anything about anything. The best Huston film I've seen aside from Sierra Madre. Pretty fucking awesome.
User ReviewGarrett MA great cast in a great movie about a bunch of thieves. I highly recommend this movie.
User ReviewRichard JI'll go so fare as to take the stand, that this is not a B-movie, but rather a true Masterpiece of cinema, parading around as a camp joke, but saved like by that most elusive of qualities, GOOD CHARACTERS. And not just the parts played by Bogart or Jenifer Jones, but equally and maybe even more importantly, from the ragtag group of characters that surround them. Seriously the key to appreciating this film, is to ignore the "plot" and realize that it is merely a gimmick from which to propel the characters forward. In essence "Beat the Devil" is "The Big Sleep" taken even further. And I don't see how any respected movie buff could see that as a bad thing.
User ReviewIan MThey say this was the original cult movie. Imagine 'The Big Lebowski' starring Humphrey Bogart. Yeah, it's that awesome.
User ReviewJon TSources tell us that the script for this movie was dictated by Truman Capote's pet raven. The raven came up with this genius monologue for Peter Lorre: "Time . . . time," Lorre says. "What is time? Swiss manufacture it. French hoard it. Italians squander it. Americans say it is money. Hindus say it does not exist. Do you know what I say? I say time is a crook."
User ReviewVJ BSo absolutely great and sly and funny and clever. A parody film from the 1940's! Awesome!
User Reviewjeroen vIt appears audiences are still misunderstanding the film. That's a bit ironic since it's a comedy of errors where all the characters are either misunderstood or lying about who they are. The insane plot twists are based as much on the insanity of the characters and dialogue. There is lot of dialogue and not one misplaced word. The fact that film sails by even with all the verbiage is tribute first to Capote and Huston, but the actors, especially Bogart and Jones are dazzling. There may have been too many layers of irony and sarcasm coming to thick for most of the early audiences. But this is a masterful work.
