User ReviewJay BEither the writer never actually saw Psycho or just chose to flagrantly ignore much of what transpired in the first. If they were trying to create an honest follow up, they started out with a buncha strikes against them. Inaccuracies aside, Bud Cort is quite good as the replacement "is he crazy/is he not?" figure and the kinda-sorta eccentric family he creates with a girl drifter and an old carpenter is pretty darn charming. There I said it. There's a couple of legitimately spooky moments but nearly every attempt at injecting humor into the proceedings falls flat and weakens the whole thing.
User ReviewWes SWhoever wrote this apparently never actually saw Psycho since there's just way too many glaring mistakes: Fairvale becomes Fairville, Norma Bates becomes Gloria Bates and on and on. The telefilm itself is all over the place one minute acting like an episode of The Twilight Zone (Bates' land is apparently highly susceptible now to paranormal activity) to an episode of Scooby Doo. Even Psycho completists should avoid this embarresingly bad TV trash.
User ReviewGlenn CAs a Psycho franchise fan I tough this would be more like Psycho II but this look's like a Scooby-Doo episode without a dog.

User ReviewAlexander PCan't expect much from a TV movie in the 80s however with Bud Cort and using the plot surrounding the Psycho movies I expected something a little bit better. I've always been a big fan of the Psycho series of movies, practically grown up around watching the movies. Psycho was the first horror I complete sat through as a kid. However if you are a fan of the series this movie is a detour which is worth a watch just to see the old hotel again and the surroundings if you can't afford to see it on the universal studios backlot.
User ReviewJesse FA poor attempt at a psycho sequel/ spinoff. Don't see it.
User ReviewAlex rWhat were they thinking? Bates Motel is a bizarro little TV movie that was meant to be a pilot for a TV series that never came to be, thankfully. Based on Psycho, this film tells the story of a guy who is released from an insane asylum after being cured. While in the asylum, he befriends Norman Bates, and Norman leaves him the house and motel in his will. The rest of the film is a convulted mess with terrible acting, questionable plot and never once has a firm foothold in any sort of tone. It also totally ignores the continuity of the film series, which the producer of the show tried to defend but failed miserably. It was just a bad idea that made it too far and wasn't stopped anywhere in the pre-production process. It's difficult to track down nowadays as it's only officially available overseas, but it's out of print and also unreleased here in the US, and for good reason. You can find it fairly easily if you know where to look, but be warned: this is not a Psycho sequel, and what is there is just awful. It tries to be like the horror other anythology series of the day were (Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street), but it fails in nearly every possible aspect. Skippable.
User ReviewBrian BUgh, another crappy Psycho semi-sequel. This is bad thanks to the terrible acting and lack of a decent plot.
