EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevySince it was basically a tale of defeat, the nervous producers emphasized heroism, but later, under criticism of fabricating the facts with mechanically packed incidents, MGM was forced to acknowledge "some melodramatic flaws and technical mistakes."
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzAn exciting flagwaving big box office Alamo-esque suicide mission World War II film.
User ReviewPrivate UIt's ok to watch, kind of predictable but had 1 or 2 funny scenes and some pretty good action, and I saw a killing technique i've never seen before.
User ReviewBecca EFor what the film makers could do in 1943, this movie is awesome.
User ReviewNoefel Agreat war movie. awesome scene at the end as they slowly focus on the last machine gun.
User ReviewHarim Kbetter than expected despite the abundance of fog machines on set. also better than /back to bataan/ with john wayne and anthony quinn, which has the advantages of their star presence in addition to a larger budget and more realistic environments. with its relative simplicity and limited setting, it manages to cram a lot in in terms of interpersonal nuances and character development.
User ReviewDavid GReally good war movie with a great cast playing an interesting collection of characters. What's interesting is that even though it's an obvious patriotic morale-booster (it was made in 1943 after all) it doesn't shy away from the horrors of the war in the east. Even though it's fun to watch now, the characters get picked off one by one, they get sniped, die of disease, one even gets tortured to death by the Japanese and left to hang in full view of the remaining defenders. I can't imagine what it would have been like watching this while the war was still on - what if you had a father/husband/brother out there? It's strange when you think about it. What else is interesting is that the final battle sequence is surprisingly violent and intense with brutal hand-to-hand combat that doesn't pull any punches. It may be a patriotic flag-waver but it's an entirely entertaining and often moving war movie even 60 years later, a testament to its quality.
User ReviewJim MWorld War II, The Philippines: As Japanese forces advance a veteran Sgt volunteers to lead 13 men in a desperate rear guard action to slow the Japanese advance, but is this a battle any of them will walk away from? Made in 1943 at the height of the Second World War Bataan was intended as a morale booster and a salute to the Allied Forces fighting in the Pacific. Check it out. Interesting side note, the NAACP gave this film several awards for its portrail of a black soldier.
