In times of great upheaval during Passover in early-first-century Jerusalem, the fifth governor of the Roman province of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, finds himself before a pressing dilemma. As part of a tradition, the indecisive ruler offers the agitated crowd the choice to have either Jesus of Nazareth or the murderer, Barabbas, released from Roman custody; but, instead, the people demand the release of the thief. Now, as Jesus takes Barabbas' place on the cross, an inhumane act of punishment paves the way for an arduous spiritual journey of faith, leading Barabbas to Sicily's dark sulphur mines, and the blood-soaked soil of Emperor Nero's Coliseum. Will Jesus' sacrifice set Barabbas, the slave, free?

Movie Reviews

Film Comment Magazine - 8/10 by Nick PinkertonLike Fleischer's oeuvre as a whole, it's ripe for reconsideration-the Greatest Story Ever Told has been Retold and Retold, but Barabbas brings it back from the dead.
The Spectator - 8/10 by Isabel QuiglyOne might be likelier to forgive this if the film's declared intentions were less high-minded.
Old School Reviews - 6/10 by John A. NesbitLacking the Circus Maximus spectacle of its famous predecessor, Barabbas compensates with nuanced acting from Anthony Quinn
User Review - 10/10 by Matt KStarring Anthony Quinn in the title role, Barabbas was released in 1961 in the midst of a wave of widescreen epics based on biblical characters. The screenplay, by playwright Christopher Fry (who also contributed to Ben-Hur), is an unus...

User Review - 10/10 by Ashley HI saw the movie Barabbas on t.v. and I enjoyed watching it. Anthony Quinn gave an amazing performance. While he had moments of gruffness, for the most part he tackled this role as the confused, tormented Barrabas with a great deal of inner work. This movie has a wonderful music score and cinematography. It is also well written and great supporting cast as well. This film is a must-see.
User Review - 10/10 by Scalibur WWhy doesn't anyone make movies like THIS anymore?
User Review - 10/10 by John BThe sets and direction were first class, Jack Palace as the head gladiator was very good as was Anthony Quinn.
User Review - 10/10 by Stefan GBarabbas is a haunting and fascinating look at the man who was chosen in place of Jesus by the Jewish people. He returns to his old life but is occasionally haunted by Jesus' death and the claims of his followers and disciples. It may only be by the time of his death, on a cross, that he has come to see Jesus as Who He is. Jack Palance is great as an arrogant chariot driver while Anthony Quinn is Barabbas. 10/10
