Then comes the first love marred by his unwilling involvement in fascict politics, him being taken for a Jew because of his nose. Later he decides to join the army to charm the girl, but arrives too late for any fighting. He is arrested by entering German troops while he dresses in officer's uniform and mistakenly sent to POW camp as an officer.

| User ReviewStella Dit's said that comedy doesn't travel but this polish film is one of the funniest foreign films i have seen. like a comedic version of 'il conformista', it chronicles one man's attempts to fit in, be successful, meet women and find happiness, all of which come to nought as in his view, he is constantly plagued with bad luck. the film covers a lot of ground historically including the years before, during and after ww2 and plays as a satire on poland's heroic view of itself. a bit slapstick for me or i'd give it 5 stars easily. great work by director munk |

It tells the story of Jan, a shallow and ignorant man, who drifts through decades of Polish history without any real understanding of his actions. Part slapstick comedy, part moral tale, the film suggests that national history progresses not by way of self-sacrifice and heroics but by cowardice and self-delusion. |
| User ReviewMateusz ZA beautifully told and funny sweet-and-sour tale about a vain man caught up in difficult times. Yet another testimony to the difficult and ambiguous history of Poland in the 20th century. However, this is not pathetic tale of national virtue- Munk is uncompromising and unafraid to question sacred truths. Though the movie falls short of packing a knockout punch with it's ending, it remains a monumental example of how a brave filmmaker can defy the system in which he operates and create a cinematic masterpiece. |
