Living in Tiger Tail County, Mississippi, middle-aged Archie Lee Meighan and 19-year-old "Baby Doll" Meighan née McCargo have been married for close to two years. Their marriage is not based on love, but on each getting what they want from the other. Their marriage agreement has them consummating their marriage on her 20th birthday, which is in three days, and she's not looking forward to it. But she does taunt him and other men with her overt "baby doll" sexuality, fostering the baby-doll aspect by sleeping in a crib in their house's nursery. Baby Doll's now-deceased father allowed the marriage on the stipulation that Archie Lee provide Baby Doll financial security as displayed by the most resplendent house in the south. They currently live in a dilapidated mansion with her Aunt Rose Comfort, and although Archie Lee is making some renovations on it, he no longer has the financial means to make it what Baby Doll wants as his cotton-ginning competitor, the recently-arrived Sicilian Silva Vacarro who runs the cotton plantation syndicate, has effectively put him and many others in the area out of business. The Meighans' fortunes could change after Vacarro's cotton gin burns down in a case of arson. Vacarro is certain Archie Lee is the arsonist. After meeting the Meighans and learning more about their marriage, Vacarro believes the way to get what he wants is through Baby Doll. This action begins the three-way battle of wills among Vacarro, Archie Lee, and Baby Doll.

Chicago TribuneMichael WilmingtonA near-classic, balanced evenly between camp and carnality.
Film Freak CentralWalter ChawThe movie hasn't aged a day in fifty years.
Tim Dirks' The Greatest FilmsTim DirksBaby Doll (1956) has been called notorious, salacious, revolting, dirty, steamy, lewd, suggestive, morally repellent and provocative.
VarietyVariety StaffWallach as the vengeful Vacarro plays it to the hilt. Malden is cast to perfection and turns in a socko performance.
ObserverCharles TaylorAlthough Baby Doll feels tame today, the cinematography and appropriately sleazy setting still have a sizzling effect, especially in a notorious porch-swing tryst between stars Carroll Baker and Eli Wallach.
Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumIt's largely Kazan's authentic feeling for the locale, aided by Boris Kaufman's superb black-and-white cinematography, that makes this movie so special, combined with a first-rate ensemble.
The New YorkerPauline KaelIts erotic content now seems tame indeed; but the grotesquely caricatured performances and the evocation of the baking, dusty, indolent homestead make for witty and compelling viewing.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. PuccioI love this stuff; it's remarkably silly, yet the actors play it so straight you'd think it was Hamlet.
Filmcritic.comChristopher Nullan impressively steamy story for its day with some moments of true greatness
The New York TimesBosley CrowtherMr. Kazan keeps the courtship bouncing between the emotional and the ludicrous. The nonchalance of the pursuer is its most entertaining grace.
